A new month and a new edition of Yucatán Today! This time, we'll help you find the best destinations to celebrate and enjoy the summer, cenotes, and many reasons to go to the beach. Do you know where you're staying in June?

The Weather in Yucatán in June

May is the hottest month of the year in Yucatán; historically, the hottest day has been May 11, but the difference might not be that noticeable. By night, expect temperatures around 24°C (74°F). During the day, you’ll see forecasts claiming highs between 37º and 40°C (97 - 104°F); be aware that May is very humid, which might make it feel closer to 45ºC (113ºF).

May might bring intense rainstorms in the afternoons; May isn’t the rainiest month of the year, but it does mark the beginning of the rainy season. Whether or not the rain actually falls, the cloud cover and associated humidity will make you sweat; prepare your sunscreen, dress in natural fibers, and drink plenty of water to stay well hydrated.

In May, wildfires are also very prevalent. While there are agricultural fires going on between March and May, according to an official calendar, these are scheduled, well-regulated, and supervised by authorities. However, the region's high temperatures, combined with gusts of wind, can give way to fires that can spread very quickly. Do you part by picking up and correctly disposing of any glass bottles you might encounter along your way, and by calling 911 if you see a fire starting, regardless of its size.

IT’S OLIMPO SEASON

Mérida always has something to offer when it comes to culture, and the Olimpo Season is a great example. This program, organized by the Mérida City Council, has been running for over 10 years, bringing artistic and cultural activities to different venues, mainly the Olimpo Cultural Center. Many events are free, and when there’s an admission fee, the proceeds go directly to the artists. For June, there are several interesting activities. For example, on June 7 and 14, there will be a free comic strip drawing workshop for teens at the Mérida City Museum. There’s also music: on June 21 at 8 pm, you can choose between "Proudly Yucatecan: The Trovadoras del Mayab" at the Santa Lucía Park ($100 pesos, general  admission), or "Bossa Nova Underwater" with Iván Kapellmann at the Castro Pacheco Cultural Center. These are just a few highlights for the month. You can check out the full schedule at www.merida.gob.mx/cultura

THROUGHOUT JUNE: TOH BIRD FESTIVAL

If you’re into birds, Yucatán is a great place to see incredible species in their natural habitat. From April to November, the Toh Bird Festival takes place, offering a variety of activities to explore and enjoy the region’s rich birdlife. This June, there are several interesting events. From June 3 to 5, there will be birdwatching focused on aquatic species at the Ría Lagartos Biosphere Reserve. On June 7, a birdwatching outing and the presentation of the book “Las aves de Mapsa” will take place at this construction company’s reforestation area, south of Mérida. Birdwatching continues on June 8 at Parque Bepensa, and on the 13, the activity Flying Kites with Birds (Papaloteando con las aves) will also be held in town. The month wraps up with “In Search of the Xooch’” on June 21, at the cenote of the same name in Cenotillo. JUNE 3: THE FIRST SPARK OF THE REVOLUTION IN VALLADOLID

Every year on June 3, the Magic Town of Valladolid reenacts one of the region’s most important historical moments: the so-called “first spark of the Mexican Revolution”, also known as the Plan of Dzelkoop. This uprising took place on June 4, 1910, led by Maximiliano R. Bonilla and other members of the Anti-Reelectionist Front, as a stand against the dictatorship of Porfirio Díaz. The reenactment is a beloved local tradition. Residents and local authorities put a lot of heart into recreating the events that marked the beginning of the revolutionary movement in Yucatán. If you’re in town, it’s definitely worth catching, history comes to life in the streets of Valladolid.

Traditional Fairs and Fiestas in Yucatán

In Yucatán, traditional fiestas blend elements from Catholicism with pre-Hispanic beliefs. These festivities usually begin with the "bajada" of the saint—that is, moving its image from its usual place in the church to make it accessible for the faithful to view. Days later, the fiesta officially kicks off with the vaquería, a traditional celebration where people dance jarana to the live music of an orchestra. Dancers from all over the Península attend the vaquerías to show off their moves, elegantly dressed in their traditional attire. On the days that follow the vaquería, there are often popular dances. Throughout the celebration, you'll also find carnival rides for children, food stalls, and various attractions, along with processions, bullfighting activities, fireworks, and lots of noise. The following list includes the period in which celebrations take place when it has been confirmed as we go to print; otherwise, the patron saint’s festivity is listed. Check our website for the dates of vaquerías and popular dances.
