What to do in Yucatán in December
What to do in Yucatán in December, Christmas
Yucatán in December offers a unique mix of bright and fun experiences, with a cool and festive climate. Dare to get to know the state, explore ancient archaeological sites and immerse yourself in the most Yucatecan traditions. From art exhibits and music festivals to colorful markets and delicious seasonal cuisine, check out the dates and times of the year:
The weather in Yucatán in December
Winter has finally arrived! And while in Yucatán that means it’s going to be less hot, but not exactly cold (with lows averaging 19º C / 66º F and highs, 31º C / 88º F), don’t be surprised to come across Yucatecos wearing jackets, scarves, and hats—even if they’re sometimes combined with shorts and sandals. For reference, the record low temperature for Yucatán in December is 7º C / 45º F in the Puuc or Sierrita area (that is, in the southern part of the state, in villages like Muna and Tekax).
December is also when Yucatán begins the transition from rainy to dry season, with few rainy days, and not especially heavy rain, at that. Still, remember that the humidity changes your perception of temperature, amplifying both heat and cold. Don’t be surprised if you find 15º C hits different in Yucatán, as the humidity chills your bones; this feeling Yucatecos refer to as “heladez,” a made-up word that roughly translates as “iciness.”
Posadas or holiday parties
“Posadas” as such (the Mexican tradition of recreating, in song, the pilgrimage of the Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph to find a place to spend the night in Bethlehem) are not as widespread a tradition in Yucatán as in other parts of México; in several villages you’re more likely to find novenas, where people gather to pray the Rosary. However, the practice of getting together with friends and colleagues for dinner, drinks, and/or gift exchanges is usually called “posada,” despite including no religious elements whatsoever. If you’re thinking of planning a holiday party (that is, any gathering that takes place in December), restaurants, especially in Mérida, offer packages for parties of all sizes. Check out options on our social media.
Holiday hours in Yucatán
In México, families usually celebrate on Christmas Eve, instead of Christmas Day. That’s why you’ll find that many businesses have special hours on the 24th instead of the 25th. On Christmas Day you’re very likely to come across large crowds in parks, malls, and movie theaters, just to name a few. Still, for both days (as well as New Year’s Eve and Day), if you’re planning to visit any particular establishment, it’s a good idea to check out the holiday hours in advance, or go ready to be disappointed. Parks and archaeological sites are open normally even on holidays.

December 12: Day of our Lady of Guadalupe
The celebration of Our Lady of Guadalupe commemorates the anniversary of the miraculous apparition of the Mother of God in what is today the Basilica of Guadalupe in México City. It is one of the most important celebrations for the Catholic Church in México, which means that, in addition to antorchistas on streets and roads, you can also expect plenty of music, fireworks, and celebrations days in advance. On the 12th itself, the many pilgrims and celebrations, especially around the Church of San Cristóbal, all but guarantee street closures and traffic jams; plan ahead if you’re driving or riding.
December 12: Bank employee day
Some people think December 12 is an official holiday in México (it’s not) because banks are not open. This isn’t because they’re setting off fireworks at church, but because December 12 is also Bank Employee Day in México. Branches will not be open, but you can use ATMs regularly.
December 13 and 23: Wintery shows for family fun
The holiday season brings a special charm! Several ballet companies will be performing "The Nutcracker," with the Ballet Moderno Yucatán showcasing shows on December 13 and 23 at 8 pm in the Armando Manzanero Theater.
It’s a wonderful chance to enjoy a night out with family and be amazed by the beauty and skill of local dancers. Tickets start at $280 pesos on the event day on www.tusboletos.mx.
December 18: A nightly visit at Gran Museo del Mundo Maya
This month, enjoy the "Museos de Noche (Museums by Night)" program, where each third Wednesday features evening tours of various museums in the city. This time, Gran Museo del Mundo Maya will open its doors on December 18, from 7 to 8 pm. Admission is free, but space is limited, so be sure to register by sending an email to museodenocheredmy@gmail.com.
December 28: The Tizimín Fair is back
On December 28, one of the most anticipated celebrations for the people of Tizimín returns: the Tizimín Fair.
This traditional festival, honoring the Three Kings, is one of the oldest in the southeast and runs for two to three weeks, reaching its peak on January 6. No matter when you drop by, you’ll find a delightful array of traditional food, music, dancing, and plenty of activities to enjoy. It’s an experience you won’t want to miss!

Traditional Fairs in December
In Yucatán, traditional fiestas blend elements from Catholicism with pre-Hispanic beliefs. These festivities usually begin with the "bajada" of the saint—that is, moving its image from its usual place in the church to make it accessible for the faithful to view.
Days later, the fiesta officially kicks off with the vaquería, a traditional celebration where people dance jarana to the live music of an orchestra. Dancers from all over the Península attend the vaquerías to show off their moves, elegantly dressed in their traditional attire. On the days that follow the vaquería, there are often popular dances.
Throughout the celebration, you'll also find carnival rides for children, food stalls, and various attractions, along with processions, bullfighting activities, fireworks, and lots of noise.
The following list includes the period in which celebrations take place when it has been confirmed as we go to print; otherwise, the patron saint’s festivity is listed. Check our website for the dates of vaquerías and popular dances.
- Virgin of the Immaculate Conception
December 8, Chapab e Izamal - Our Lady of the Expectation
December 18, Dzemul - The Christ Child
December 25, Espita - Our Lady of the Star
December 27, Peto
