Weather in Yucatán in December
December marks the beginning of Yucatán’s dry season, but that doesn’t mean no rain at all: “nortes,” the local name for cold fronts, can sometimes bring cloudy days and what are usually light drizzles. Daily highs average a cool (for Yucatán) 29ºC, but remember that the heat index can make them feel closer to 34ºC. In the early mornings, expect lows around 18ºC, but do keep in mind that the humidity around these parts usually chills people to the bone.
Another important point to consider: sub-tropical Yucatán has very high UV indices year-round. Always carry water for hydration, use ample sunscreen, and wear protective clothing (including hats).
Events in Yucatán in December
Posadas or holiday parties
“Posadas” as such (the Mexican tradition of recreating, in song, the pilgrimage of the Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph to find a place to spend the night in Bethlehem) are not as widespread a tradition in Yucatán as in other parts of México; in several villages you’re more likely to find novenas, where people gather to pray the Rosary. However, the practice of getting together with friends and colleagues for dinner, drinks, and/or gift exchanges is usually called “posada,” despite including no religious elements whatsoever. If you’re thinking of planning a holiday party (that is, any gathering that takes place in December), restaurants, especially in Mérida, offer packages for parties of all sizes. Check out options on our social media.
Holiday hours in Yucatán
In México, families usually celebrate on Christmas Eve, instead of Christmas Day. That’s why you’ll find that many businesses have special hours on the 24th instead of the 25th. On Christmas Day you’re very likely to come across large crowds in parks, malls, and movie theaters, just to name a few. Still, for both days (as well as New Year’s Eve and Day), if you’re planning to visit any particular establishment, it’s a good idea to check out the holiday hours in advance, or go ready to be disappointed. Parks and archaeological sites are open normally even on holidays.

Traditional Fairs in December
In Yucatán, traditional fiestas are a showcase of religious syncretism, blending elements from Catholicism with pre-Hispanic beliefs.
These festivities usually begin with the "bajada" of the saint—that is, moving its image from its usual place in the church to make it accessible for the faithful to view. Days later, the fiesta officially kicks off with the vaquería, a traditional celebration where people dance jarana to the live music of an orchestra.
Dancers from all over the Península attend the vaquerías to show off their moves, elegantly dressed in their traditional attire. On the days that follow the vaquería, there are often popular dances.
Throughout the celebration, you'll also find carnival rides for children, food stalls, and various attractions, along with processions, bullfighting activities, fireworks, and lots of noise. The following list includes the period in which celebrations take place when it has been confirmed as we go to print; otherwise, the patron saint’s festivity is listed. Check our website for the dates of vaquerías and popular dances.
