What to do in Yucatán in August
August is the end of what Yucatecos refer to as “La Temporada” (the season), meaning the summer months of July and August. These were the months that traditionally comprised schoolchildren’s summer break, which meant entire families would move to the beach for the season. Current school calendars have shortened the season, as children usually start school in mid-August. As the month progresses, you’ll notice the coastal villages’ bustle declining, and the traffic in Mérida pick back up with a vengeance.

August is part of Yucatán's rainy season. Though not as wet as June or September, you can expect intense, albeit usually brief, afternoon downpours. Even without rain, the constant cloud cover and high humidity will keep you sweating.
NEW EXHIBITION AT THE PALACIO CANTÓN MUSEUM
The Palacio Cantón Museum recently opened the exhibition “Donde la ceniza hizo nido (Where Ash Made Its Nest)”, a powerful collection of photogravures that explores the relationship between loss and memory through visual language. The exhibit transforms remnants into visual memory, landscapes into archives, and the gaze into a political act, poetically evoking what burns away and what endures. You can visit this exhibit along with the museum’s three other current exhibitions: “Ek Chuah, Trade Among the Maya;” “Palacio Cantón: Witness to History;” and “Fissures of Sound.” General admission is $95 pesos.
SACRED STITCHES AT MÉRIDA’S GRAN MUSEO DEL MUNDO MAYA
Through August 30, catch a unique exhibit at the Gran Museo del Mundo Maya: “Kili’ich Chuuyo’ob: Ritual Maya Embroidery.” The exhibit honors ritual Maya embroidery as a community practice that binds together the sacred, the ceremonial, and the everyday aspects of life. With more than 50 textile items from all over the Península, this temporary exhibit is a reminder that Maya heritage is not only about the past, but also about the present and the future.

THROUGHOUT AUGUST: OLIMPO SEASON
Mérida always has something to offer when it comes to culture, and the Olimpo Season is a great example. This program, organized by the Mérida City Council, has been running for over 10 years, bringing artistic and cultural activities to different venues, mainly the Olimpo Cultural Center. Many of the events are free, and when there’s an admission fee, the proceeds go directly to the artists, supporting local talent. This August, the program includes events such as the theatrical performance “Miradas del Drag en la escena” on the 8 at 4 pm at the Olimpo Cultural Center; the interdisciplinary workshop “Resonance of the New Era”, led by artist Tanúbela on the 15 at 11 am at the Municipal Dance Center; and on the 24, a woodworking and artistic engineering workshop at Parque de la Mejorada. You can check out the full schedule at www.merida.gob.mx/cultura

If you own a vehicle – be it a motorcycle, car, or even a trailer – get ready, because from June through December, it's time to renew your license plates. After that, you’ll have to head to your chosen location to pick up your new plates. Fees for the new plates vary, from roughly 800 to 3000 pesos, depending on your vehicle type. AUGUST 9 -10: TAK’AN FESTIVAL
From August 9 to 10, tradition takes center stage in Halachó with a festival dedicated to traditional Maya cuisine, crafted with local ingredients and ancestral knowledge. While food is the star of the event, it won’t be the only one; there will also be jarana dance performances, storytelling by local communities, workshops, contests, and many other activities. This celebration aims to preserve and honor Yucatán’s rich cultural and culinary heritage. It’s an experience not to be missed, an opportunity to reconnect with the flavors and stories that define us.

Don't miss the maritime pilgrimage of the Black Christ of Sisal, a unique Yucatecan tradition that fuses faith with vibrant local culture. This annual celebration, which honors the patron saint of fishermen, begins in early August with festivities that culminate in a spectacular maritime procession. On Sunday, August 24, 2025, join hundreds of devotees and adorned boats to accompany the Black Christ on a journey through the sea, an experience that unites the community and immerses you in the magic of Yucatan's traditions. If you're looking for an authentic connection to the essence of the state, this pilgrimage is a must-see event.
Traditional Fairs in Yucatán in August
In Yucatán, traditional fiestas are a showcase of religious syncretism, blending elements from Catholicism with pre-Hispanic beliefs. These festivities usually begin with the "bajada" of the saint—that is, moving its image from its usual place in the church to make it accessible for the faithful to view.
Days later, the fiesta officially kicks off with the Vaquería, a traditional celebration where people dance Jarana to the live music of an orchestra. Dancers from all over the Península attend the Vaquerías to show off their best steps, elegantly dressed in their traditional attire. On the days that follow the Vaquería, there are often popular dances. Throughout the celebration, you'll also find carnival rides for children, food stalls, and various attractions, along with processions, bullfighting activities, fireworks, and lots of noise.
