The Weather in Yucatán in September

In Yucatán, ambient temperatures don't vary much between May and September: thermometers typically show highs averaging 34ºC (93ºF) and lows averaging 24°C (74°F). However, the true story is the heat index—what the temperature feels like due to humidity. This can hit an unsafe 49ºC (120ºF) in Mérida! Always carry water for hydration, use ample sunscreen, and wear protective clothing (including hats).

September is the rainiest month in Yucatán, and it represents the peak of Yucatán's rainy season. Expect intense, albeit usually brief, afternoon downpours pretty much every day. Even without rain, the constant cloud cover and high humidity will keep you sweating.

Keep in mind that hurricane season in Yucatán runs from June to November. September and October have historically been the busiest months for bigger storms in the region; should a tropical system—whether a depression or a full-blown hurricane—head our way, expect changes to normal life in Yucatán, including port closures and shifts in business hours. Stay updated on official announcements throughout your visit—you’ll always find the latest updates on our social media.

Events in Yucatán in September

THROUGHOUT SEPTEMBER: NEW EXHIBITION AT THE PALACIO CANTÓN MUSEUM

The Palacio Cantón Museum recently opened the exhibition “Donde la ceniza hizo nido (Where Ash Made Its Nest)”, a powerful collection of photogravures that explores the relationship between loss and memory through visual language. The exhibit transforms remnants into visual memory, landscapes into archives, and the gaze into a political act, poetically evoking what burns away and what endures. You can visit this exhibit along with the museum’s three other current exhibitions: “Ek Chuah, Trade Among the Maya;” “Palacio Cantón: Witness to History;” and “Fissures of Sound.” General admission is $95 pesos.

SEPTEMBER ONLY: TEMPORARY EXHIBITIONS AT THE MUSEUM OF THE CITY OF MÉRIDA

This month, the Museum of the City of Mérida is hosting two temporary exhibitions. “A Eva” by Soledad Velasco is an emotional journey born from grief and the need to start over. “De ida y vuelta” by Fabricio Vanden Broeck shows how a simple drawing can evolve into works on metal, wood, or even skin. Both exhibitions invite us to look inward through the lens of art.

Available through the end of September.

Tue. – Fri. 9 am – 6 pm

Sat. – Sun. 9 am – 2 pm

SEPTEMBER 16: MEXICAN INDEPENDENCE DAY

2409 Monumento a la Patria Romulo Rozo Mérida by Yucatán Today (1)Although many people believe México’s Independence Day is on May 5, the real celebration takes place on September 16. Festivities begin on the night of the 15, when the president reenacts the historic “Grito de Independencia” from the National Palace, just as Miguel Hidalgo did in 1810 to call for freedom. In Yucatán, the governor does the same from the Government Palace in Mérida. September 16 is a national holiday, and many take the opportunity to gather at home, enjoy traditional dishes like pozole or chiles en nogada, and celebrate in true Mexican style.

SEPTEMBER 19: “LAS 50 SOMBRAS DE TILA”

If you enjoy humor with a local twist, don’t miss the stand-up comedy show “Las 50 Sombras de Tila (The Fifty Shades of Tila)”, performed by the hilarious Tila María Sesto. With her irreverent and very Yucatecan style, Tila blends anecdotes, social commentary, and cheeky humor in a performance full of laughs and everyday observations. This edition will feature a special guest: La Bruja Cuchi Cuchi, bringing even more heat to the night. Catch the show at Teatro Armando Manzanero, with performances at 7 and 9:30 pm. Tickets start at $270 pesos and are available at www.tusboletos.mx

SEPTEMBER 22: FALL EQUINOX

Chichen-Itza-equinoccio-equinox-kukulkan-by-Juan-Manuel-Mier-y-TeranOn Sunday, September 22, the sun will “cross” the Earth’s equatorial line, marking the start of autumn in the northern hemisphere. Around the world, we’ll have exactly 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of night. However, in Yucatán, both equinoxes (March and September) are special, as they offer the chance to witness the archaeo-astronomical phenomena designed by the ancient Maya in structures like the Palace of the Seven Dolls in Dzibilchaltún, the Pyramid of Kukulcán in Chichén Itzá, or the Dovecote in Uxmal. Check our social media for more information on special events related to these phenomena.

Traditional Fairs in September

2408 Gremio Bordado Yucateco Uayma Bandera de Gremio by Yucatán TodayIn Yucatán, traditional fiestas are a showcase of religious syncretism, blending elements from Catholicism with pre-Hispanic beliefs. These festivities usually begin with the "bajada" of the saint—that is, moving its image from its usual place in the church to make it accessible for the faithful to view. Days later, the fiesta officially kicks off with the vaquería a traditional celebration where people dance jarana to the live music of an orchestra.

Dancers from all over the Península attend the vaquerías to show off their moves, elegantly dressed in their traditional attire. On the days that follow the vaquería, there are often popular dances. Throughout the celebration, you'll also find carnival rides for children, food stalls, and various attractions, along with processions, bullfighting activities, fireworks, and lots of noise.
