What to do in Yucatán in April
Looking for a different month?
April is like a preview of what’s to come, as they say, with temperatures reaching up to 35°C (95°F) during the day and 22°C (72°F) at night. This will prepare you for the scorching May, the hottest month of the year. It’s a month with plenty of sunshine and little rain, so if you’re going out, don’t forget to wear sunscreen and stay hydrated, as humidity levels can reach up to 75%.
Events in April in Yucatán
THIS MONTH AT THE PALACIO CANTÓN REGIONAL ANTHROPOLOGY MUSEUM
Palacio Cantón Regional Anthropology Museum is currently offering a healthy mix of pre-Hispanic artifacts and Mérida history through three outstanding exhibits. “Ek Chuah: Trade among the Maya” features items that highlight the artistry and ingenuity of this civilization. “Palacio Cantón: Witness to history” is a look at the museum building itself, a feat of architecture and a prime example of the prosperity Mérida saw during the henequén boom. Finally, in “De Primissimo Cartello” you'll see snapshots of Yucatán history and society as captured through the lens of the city's most prominent photography studio in the 19th and 20th centuries.
EXHIBITION AT THE RAILWAY MUSEUM
Marcela Díaz, a prominent Yucatecan artist specializing in contemporary textile art, presents her new exhibition "Fibras que hablan… Tierra y memoria" (Fibers that Speak... Earth and Memory). Through 24 works created with organic textile fibers such as henequén, coconut, and sansevieria, the artist explores emotions and seeks new ways of connection, while offering a retrospective of her career. Don't miss this exhibition, as it will be available in the Temporary Exhibitions Hall of the museum until this month.
Tue. - Sat. 10 am - 8 pm
Sundays, 10 am - 6 pm
BASEBALL SEASON
The Leones de Yucatán are back on the field with a new season full of excitement. This April, the team—celebrating 71 years of history—will play home games at the recently renovated Kukulkán Stadium on April 1,3, 5, and 6. The rest of the month, they’ll be on the road, but don’t lose track of them! Whether you’re a baseball fan or just looking to experience one of Yucatán’s most beloved traditions, don’t miss the chance to catch a game at the stadium. And if the game doesn’t win you over, the food definitely will!
HOLY WEEK IN YUCATÁN
México, like the rest of Latin America, has a strong Catholic tradition, and many of its festivities hold religious significance. Holy Week is one of the most important, not only for believers but also because children are on vacation, and many workplaces close on Holy Thursday and Good Friday. In Yucatán, one of the most impressive Via Crucis reenactments takes place in the municipality of Acanceh on Good Friday. This year, it falls on April 18, offering a great opportunity to witness this tradition filled with history and culture. If you decide to attend, always remember to do so with respect.
THROUGH APRIL 30: TEMPORARY EXHIBITION AT GRAN MUSEO DEL MUNDO MAYA
“Wíiniko'ob ku je'iko'ob u beel k’aax: People Who Open Paths in the Forest” is the latest temporary exhibition at Gran Museo del Mundo Maya. This exhibition showcases the work of 12 young artists from the Yucatán Península, who explore the connection between tradition and modernity through their art. Using contemporary creative expressions, they reimagine their cultural identity as people of Maya heritage. Don’t miss it! The exhibition will be open until April 30.
FROM APRIL: TOH BIRD FESTIVAL
The 23rd edition of the Toh Bird Festival, which took place from April to November last year, was an amazing event for bird enthusiasts. During those months, various activities were held, such as bird watching in different destinations around the state, film screenings, workshops, and much more. This year, the 24th edition of the festival will begin this month and will have Ek Balam as its new venue. Discover all the events happening in the coming months through their Facebook Festival de las Aves TOH, and become a true bird lover.
THROUGH APRIL 4: NANÁ IN PAINTINGS
David Serrano presents Naná, his new exhibition at Fundación Centro Cultural La Cúpula, featuring eight portraits that explore the connection between Émile Zola’s novel Nana and the life of Irma Serrano, who controversially performed the play based on the novel in the Mexican theater. Through these portraits the artist takes us back to the 70s and 80s, blending theater, memory, and art. Don’t miss the opportunity to experience this visual proposal, available until April 4.
Tue. - Fri. 4 - 8 pm
Saturdays, 10 am - 2 pm

If you love sports and want to experience Yucatán in a different way, there are two events this month that you won’t want to miss: the Izamal Half Marathon and the 5th edition of the Carrera del Mar in Chicxulub, both happening on April 13. The Izamal Half Marathon offers three distances: 5k, 10k, and 21k. Registration for the first two costs $390 pesos, while the 21k race costs $550 pesos. You can sign up at www.vivedeporte.mx. Traditional Fairs and Fiestas in Yucatán
In Yucatán, traditional fiestas blend elements from Catholicism with pre-Hispanic beliefs. These festivities usually begin with the "bajada" of the saint—that is, moving its image from its usual place in the church to make it accessible for the faithful to view. Days later, the fiesta officially kicks off with the vaquería, a traditional celebration where people dance jarana to the live music of an orchestra. Dancers from all over the Península attend the vaquerías to show off their moves, elegantly dressed in their traditional attire. On the days that follow the vaquería, there are often popular dances. Throughout the celebration, you'll also find carnival rides for children, food stalls, and various attractions, along with processions, bullfighting activities, fireworks, and lots of noise. The following list includes the period in which celebrations take place when it has been confirmed as we go to print; otherwise, the patron saint’s festivity is listed. Check our website for the dates of vaquerías and popular dances.
