Sisal, Yucatán: Two Days of History, Legends, and the Sea
Sisal is not just a beach; it is a journey through time. As the first commercial port of the Yucatán Peninsula, it served as the gateway for travelers from central Mexico and beyond, including Empress Carlota. Today, this certified Magical Town offers an atmosphere of serenity that is hard to find anywhere else.
Day 1: Mangroves and Adventure
Your first day is dedicated to soaking up the history of this historic port and embracing its unhurried pace.
Exploring the Historic Center
The town is easy to explore on foot or by bicycle. If you arrive hungry, stop by one of the local loncherías. While Sisal seafood is world-famous, you can also indulge in local favorites like carne asada or cochinita pibil tacos.
Afterward, head out for a kayak tour through the mangroves. While you can find guides upon arrival, it is highly recommended to book in advance with a local Sisal ecotourism company. You will paddle through mangrove tunnels in total silence, broken only by birdsong, before reaching a pristine freshwater spring (ojo de agua) for a refreshing swim.

Upon your return, continue your Sisal sightseeing at the heart of the port: the Fort of Santiago and its lighthouse, which protected the town from pirate attacks during the colonial era. Don't forget to visit the colorful tourist letters and the iconic pier. The pier is the perfect spot to feel the ocean breeze and watch local fishermen at work.

For dinner, whether you choose a restaurant by the pier or near the lagoon, you are guaranteed a feast of fresh, local ingredients.

To end the day, find a quiet spot on the sand to witness a Sisal sunset, where the sun dips directly into the sea, painting the sky in vibrant shades of purple and orange.

Day 2: Beach and Relaxation
Wake up early before the breeze picks up to enjoy some paddleboarding on the calm waters. Once you’ve worked up an appetite, visit one of the charming new cafes now operating in this Magical Town.
Now, you have a choice: relax and sunbathe on the white sands or continue the adventure with a snorkeling tour. Both are excellent ways to enjoy the Yucatán coast, depending on your mood and budget. As you bid farewell to the coast and head back toward Mérida, the town of Hunucmá awaits.

Stop by the local craft market, admire the Neomaya architecture of the municipal building, and visit the Nicté-Ha footwear workshop for a pair of handcrafted sandals. If the heat catches up to you, cool off at Cenote El Pocito, a small but lovingly maintained freshwater sinkhole.

Before leaving, stop at Lonchería El Maya for a traditional dinner of panuchos, salbutes, or their famous queso de bola sopes, a true modern classic of the region.
Essential Tips for Your Sisal and Hunucmá Trip
- Cash is King: While some Sisal restaurants accept credit cards, the internet signal is often unreliable. Bring plenty of cash, as there is only one ATM in the entire port.
- Sun and Environmental Protection: Use biodegradable sunscreen and wear a hat. If you are heading into the mangroves, insect repellent is essential.
- Book in Advance: Because this is a popular Yucatán weekend getaway, ensure you book your Sisal hotel or vacation rental well ahead of time.
- Transportation: If you aren't driving, "colectivo" vans depart from downtown Mérida (64 x 65 and 67). The trip takes approximately 90 minutes.
- Responsible Tourism: This area is a vital sea turtle nesting site and a delicate ecosystem. Please do not leave trash on the beach and avoid taking seashells or sand with you.
