A Getaway to Three Haciendas in Two Days
Ready for an unforgettable journey through the history and culture of Yucatan's haciendas? Discover the fascinating henequen process at Sotuta de Peón and the majestic Uxmal Haciendas. Enjoy delicious local cuisine and explore the enigmatic archaeological sites of the Puuc Route, like Uxmal. An adventure full of history, nature, and flavor awaits you.
Day 1
- Sotuta de Peón
- Food:
- Sotuta de Peón
- Ticul
- Santa Elena
- Visit to the Mummy Museum
- Tour of Hacienda Uxmal
- Lodging:
- Hacienda Sotuta de Peón
- (Tecoh)

- Hotel Uxmal Resort (Uxmal)
- Hacienda Santo Domingo de Yunkú (Yunkú)
Start your journey through the history of Yucatán’s haciendas at the place where its golden (or green) era comes back to life: Sotuta de Peón. Their henequén* tour takes you through the entire process of transforming the agave plant into ropes and textiles, using both traditional and semi-industrial methods. It’s truly a trip back in time, enjoyable for all ages…and it includes a refreshing swim in a cenote!
*If you’ve done the henequén tour, why not explore the hacienda from a different perspective this time? Try their horseback or ATV tours options.
After your tour, it’ll be time to make a decision. You can have lunch at the hacienda’s own restaurant, at “El Príncipe Tutul Xiu” in Ticul, or at “La Central”, a local kitchen/restaurant in Santa Elena.
Once you’ve eaten, make a quick stop at the Mummy Museum of Santa Elena. Located in a structure dating back to 1779, this small museum features a compact but insightful section on the Maya Social War.
The Mummy Museum originated when the remains of a German immigrant family, who settled in Yucatán during the Second Mexican Empire under Emperor Maximilian of Habsburg, were discovered. Though the museum retains its name (and the display of the mummified bodies), and despite its small size, its section about the local Maya population makes it an interesting stop for anyone exploring the area.
Next, discover another side of Yucatán’s haciendas today with a tour of the Hacienda Uxmal Plantation & Museum. Aboard a vintage Land Rover, you and your companions will explore the fields of what was once the Santa Cruz Uxmal sugar hacienda, founded in 1673. The tour blends adventure, agro-tourism, history, legends, and even scenic views of nearby structures from the Uxmal archaeological site.
For lodging, you can stay at Hotel Hacienda Uxmal or The Lodge at Uxmal, venture a bit further to stay at Uxmal Resort, take a short trip back to the cozy cabins of Sotuta de Peón, or head to Hacienda Santo Domingo de Yunkú.
Day 2
- Visit to Uxmal or the Puuc Route
- Visit to Santo Domingo de Yunkú or Tekik de Regil (by reservation only)
The second part of the day is all about relaxing and connecting with nature (and maybe a bit of self-reflection) at a hacienda. But if you’re up for something more active, get an early start and visit one of the archaeological sites along the Puuc Route, such as Uxmal, Kabah, or Sayil. For a more complete experience, keep in mind that guides from the Hotel Hacienda Uxmal Plantation & Museum also offer tours of all the nearby archaeological sites.
After your visit, it’s time to disconnect from the world. You can head to Hacienda Santo Domingo de Yunkú, which offers a day pass that includes access to the pool, sun deck, hammocks, and cenote. The hacienda also has a restaurant where you can enjoy a snack or a traditional dish for an additional fee. Another option is to book the full culinary experience at Hacienda Tekik de Regil, located a bit farther north. Founded in the 16th century, this luxurious estate is one of the oldest in Yucatán, and grants access to its stunning grounds.
