Río Lagartos and surroundings in in 48 Hours: From Jungle Cenotes to Pink Lagoons
Day 1
- Panabá
- San Felipe
- Río Lagartos
- Accommodation in Río Lagartos
Panabá: Kick Off Your Adventure with a Splash
The adventure starts first thing in the morning. Leave Mérida heading east, where natural treasures still feel intimate and authentic. Your first stop is Panabá to visit Cenote Acancún. This cenote, often less crowded than the major circuits, is an oasis of blue water amid tranquility. Descend its wooden stairs and cool off in its depths. It's the perfect dose of peace and nature to start your day.
San Felipe: Mangroves and Seaside Lunch
Continue to the picturesque port of San Felipe, famous for its brightly colored wooden houses. Here, besides lush nature, you'll find dishes that truly taste like the sea. You can choose to eat at the port or take a tour that includes food. Here are a few options:
- Boat Tour: Don't miss a trip through the mangroves. It's the best way to explore the area's biodiversity and spot local birds.
- Cenote Kambulnah: An aguada-type (open) cenote that is accessed by boat. Its calm, vegetation-ringed waters are ideal for a relaxing swim.
- Playa Bonita: A peaceful spot with rustic palapas (thatched-roof shelters), perfect for grabbing lunch (fresh seafood guaranteed!) and enjoying the breeze before your final destination.
Río Lagartos, the Natural Grand Finale
Río Lagartos is a natural refuge for crocodiles and home to the famous pink flamingo. You may want to check into your hotel first, but don't delay: it’s time to stretch your legs and contemplate the coastal beauty with some of the options this lovely port offers:
- Stroll the Malecón: Take a walk as evening falls, observing local life and the fishing boats.
- Watch the Sunset: The view of the sun dipping below the estuary (ría) is an unforgettable spectacle. Find a good spot and simply enjoy the changing colors.
- Go Stargazing: Far from the city's light pollution, Río Lagartos is perfect for astrotourism. You can do this on your own or choose a specialized tour guide.
- Spot Crocodiles (Safely!): You can also take a guided night tour to see the crocodiles (lagartos) that give this port its name. Don't worry—it's a very safe experience.
Day 2
- Tour de los manglares y baño maya en Río Lagartos
- Cancunito y Las Coloradas
- Cenote Kikil
Río Lagartos: Birds and the Maya Bath
Start Day Two with a total immersion in nature—literally! One of the most famous activities in Río Lagartos is the mangrove tour, which includes bird watching and the unique "Maya Bath." A boat takes you to an area of the estuary where white, mineral-rich mud is found. Cover your skin from head to toe with this "Maya clay," which acts as a natural exfoliant and sunscreen, just as the ancient Maya did. Afterward, the boat will take you to a spot with crystal-clear water to wash off and feel your skin completely renewed.
Las Coloradas: The Surreal Landscape
Fresh and exfoliated, head to a place you've likely seen on postcards and viral social media videos: the famous pink waters of Las Coloradas. These are salt evaporation ponds that, thanks to a high concentration of microorganisms and salt, boast an astonishingly vibrant pink color.
Important: Due to ecological and health protection rules, swimming is strictly prohibited, but the landscape is so surreal that the stop is absolutely worth it, both for the experience and for the spectacular photos.
Afterward, head to a favorite spot for many Yucatecans: Cancunito Beach. This white-sand beach lives up to its name, resembling a Caribbean beach for much of the year. It's a pristine location for a stroll, a swim in the sea, and taking stunning photos.
Kikil: A Refreshing Close
Since one cenote is never enough, this route includes another on your way back to Mérida: Cenote Kikil. Located near Tizimín, this large, deep, open-type cenote is the perfect spot for a final plunge. Its facilities include tourist services, making it a comfortable and safe stop to round out your circuit.
Essential Tips for Your 48-Hour Adventure
To ensure you get the most out of your two-day trip, keep these recommendations in mind:
- Dress for Comfort: Opt for comfortable clothes and shoes (sandals or water shoes for swimming and sneakers for walking) and don't forget a cap or hat to protect yourself from the intense Yucatecan sun.
- Climate Essentials: The sun and heat are intense. Apply sunscreen constantly (ideally biodegradable for the cenotes) and insect repellent, especially at sunset.
- Always Ready to Swim! Keep your swimsuit and a towel handy at all times, as the opportunity for a quick dip can arise unexpectedly.
- Handling Money: Many of the most authentic and local spots, such as cenotes and small restaurants, only accept cash. Make sure you carry enough for entrance fees, boat tours, and meals.
