Day 1

Start your adventure with a visit to the stunning archaeological site of Ek Balam, located north of Valladolid. Here, you’ll get to admire one of the best-preserved gems of Maya art: the Sak Xok Naaj, an exquisitely decorated mausoleum featuring a monumental earth monster, winged warriors, and many other details. It’s located on the fourth level of the Grand Palace. Even if it seems there’s not much to see higher up, take your time and make sure to reach the top of the Acropolis. Taking a break there to enjoy the view and the refreshing breeze will be an unforgettable experience for the whole family.

After your visit, don’t miss the nearby X’Canché Cenote. This is a beautiful example of an open cenote where you and your travel companions can cool off. Once you're done, enjoy a delicious meal and community tour in the town of Ek Balam. Keep in mind that community tourism is a way to directly benefit the local population, as they are the ones who manage the activities and promote their own heritage.

Next stop: the Magical Town of Espita. Here, time seems to pause in a postcard-like setting; stroll along its quiet streets, visit its church, take a look at its market, and above all, don’t miss the chance to sit and people-watch from the benches in the main square. You’ll see how the town changes face as night falls—you won’t be able to resist trying some of the local street snacks.

When it comes to lodging, Espita offers excellent options to pamper yourself, from luxury hotels to cozy cabins and camping areas. However, you can also choose to return to Ek Balam, where you’ll find cabins and camping options managed by the local community.

Day 2

  • Relaxed morning
  • Calotmul’s retable
  • Smoked meats in Temozón

With such a wide variety of lodging options, chances are you picked a place where you’ll want to do more than just sleep. Whether it’s relaxing beside (or in) the pool, watching the trees sway in the breeze, or setting off on a hike or a bit of birdwatching, the idea is to enjoy a slow morning that lets you recharge as part of your adventure.

To add an extra touch to the experience, don’t miss the chance to stop in the town of Calotmul and visit its Parish of the Immaculate Conception. On the outside, the church isn’t particularly striking, but its interior is absolutely worth the visit. The tunnel-like shape of the nave will guide you to one of Yucatán’s most impressive colonial treasures: its exquisite retable. One of the few surviving examples of colonial baroque in Yucatán, it’s made of intricately carved wood and finished in golden tones that make it one of a kind. Calotmul is also regionally known for its bizcotelas—crunchy breads similar to biscotti that are especially delicious when chuc (dunked) in coffee, milk, or hot chocolate.

Temozon-Carne-Ahumada-800x464-2

Finally, head to Temozón, south of Ek Balam. This town is famous for its delicious smoked meats, including its renowned longaniza sausage. Pick whichever restaurant appeals to you the most—many of them offer pools and wading areas where kids can splash between tacos. And yes, the menu often consists of tacos filled with the smoked meat of your choice, typically served on handmade tortillas and optionally topped with delicious queso de hebra (string cheese) from the nearby town of Sucilá.

Bon voyage!
