Ready to uncover the hidden treasures of the Maya coast? Your adventure begins in Xtampú, where the white, salty landscape holds ancient stories. Let the sea breeze guide you into the fascinating world of Xcambó, an archaeological site that, while not widely known, reveals intriguing secrets of the Maya civilization. And to complete this first day of exploration, the beaches of Telchac Puerto invite you to relax and recharge.

Day 1

  • Xtampú
  • Xcambó
  • Beach time
  • Lunch: La Mojarrita de Pepín
  • Coconut treats
  • Dinner around the plaza
  • Accommodation:
    • Capitán Criollo (in the plaza)
    • Reef Yucatán (all-inclusive)

As Mark shares in his article “A Salt Worker's Tale”, the sun shows no mercy in Xtampú. That’s why we’ll begin our getaway right here, to learn about the marine salt extraction process that has taken place here for thousands of years. After this tour, continue your journey along the Maya coast with a visit to the only archaeological site in Yucatán located on the coast: Xcambó

Although Xcambó isn’t a well-known as other sites, archaeologists have uncovered fascinating insights into the tales of the ancient Maya through excavations here. Discover them in our article:  What We Know About the Maya Thanks to Xcambó

Despite the wonderful breeze (and the spectacular view) you’ll enjoy from the top of the pyramid, you’ll likely be feeling the heat after your visit. That’s why the next stop is the beautiful beach of Telchac Puerto. All beaches in México are public, so you don’t need anything more than your swimsuit—maybe a towel and a change of clothes—to enjoy them. If you’d prefer a slightly more private experience with food and drink service, there are also several beach clubs in the area.

When hunger strikes, head to “La Mojarrita de Pepín”, a restaurant near the plaza known for its delicious flavors. Their garlic shrimp tacos, octopus in ink, and spicy shrimp tacos are just a few of the options that rarely disappoint. But as hard as it may be, save room for dessert and stop by one of Telchac’s sweet shops, where coconut is transformed into an amazing variety of treats.

From there, head to your hotel to rest for a while. There are plenty of options to suit different travel styles and budgets. For example, Capitán Criollo is located in the town center; just a few minutes away is Yucatán’s only all-inclusive hotel, Reef Yucatán; or, if you’d prefer a more intimate, authentically Yucatecan experience, consider renting a whole house: Las Tunas Telchac is a fantastic option.

When it’s time for dinner, head to the plaza, where you’ll find plenty of laid-back food options.

Day 2

  • Beach time
  • San Crisanto
  • Lunch at: Los Patitos
  • Coconut treats
  • Motul

One of the best parts of waking up at the beach is enjoying the sea before the breeze rolls in. In the mornings, usually before 10 or 11 am, there’s little wind, and the ocean is as flat as a mirror. It’s the perfect moment to take a dip (or simply let the sea gently caress your feet).

When you’ve had your fill of saltwater (if that’s even possible), it’s time to experience one of the most peaceful and beautiful tours Yucatán has to offer: the San Crisanto mangroves. On a small wooden boat (pushed along by your guide using a long pole), you’ll glide across crystal-clear waters—only about 11 inches deep—until you reach Dzonot Dzik, a cenote hidden in the heart of the mangroves. This refreshing swim will surely be one of those unforgettable experiences you carry with you for life.

This tour will have surely worked up your appetite, so next up is lunch at Los Patitos. Here, you can enjoy one of Yucatán’s favorite dishes, fried fish, or one of their delicious ceviches.

We’ll close the day with a visit to the Magical Town of Motul, on the way back to Mérida, but not without one more stop for coconut treats (we know you won’t be able to resist). In Motul, visit the Church and Ex-Convent of St. John the Baptist, and take a stroll through the plaza for some local street snacks.

Bon voyage!
