A Getaway to Uxmal and its surroundings in two days
Embark on a fascinating exploration of Uxmal and its surroundings, a corner of Yucatán where the majesty of the ancient Mayan civilization intertwines with unique cultural experiences. This itinerary proposes a one or two-day immersion, depending on your time and curiosity, unveiling the secrets of the impressive Uxmal archaeological site, the sweet history of cacao at Choco-Story, the authenticity of the Ruta Puuc, and the magic of the reborn Mayan blue color at Luis May's workshop. Prepare for an unforgettable journey through time and tradition in the heart of the Yucatecan peninsula.
Day 1
- Tour of the Uxmal archaeological site
- Visit to the Choco-Story Cacao Museum
- Lunch
- Kabah (and other sites along the Puuc Route)
- Accommodation: The Lodge at Uxmal or options between Muna and Ticul
- Ecos de Uxmal (Echoes of Uxmal) video mapping show
Of all the archaeological sites in Yucatán, Uxmal is one of those that tends to steal the most hearts. There’s something about its exquisite details, sacred geometry, and the sense of peace it offers that makes it impossible not to be moved by the experience–especially when visited slowly and with full attention to every detail.
To make the most of a two-day visit to Uxmal and its surroundings, the first thing you should decide is where you want to stay. For a luxury experience in the heart of the jungle, consider The Lodge at Uxmal or Hacienda Uxmal (the latter offers an all-inclusive option). You’ll also find a good number of lodging choices in the nearby towns of Muna and Ticul, as well as along the roads connecting them. This decision, along with your mealtime preferences, will help shape your route.
Start your adventure after breakfast at the Uxmal archaeological site. Be sure to take your time and really admire the beauty and intricacy of the site; if you’d like to enhance your visit, check out our Uxmal guide.
Once you’re done, you’ll need to decide whether you’re hungrier for food or more exploration. Right across the road is Choco-Story Uxmal, an eco-museum dedicated to cacao. This is a full experience where you’ll learn about cacao cultivation from pre-Hispanic times to how it’s processed and sold today. Choco-Story is also a wildlife management unit, home to various animals (including monkeys, birds, and even a couple of jaguars) that can no longer return to the wild due to abuse or injury.
If you’re looking to eat nearby, Coole Chepa Chic, the restaurant at The Lodge at Uxmal, is perfectly located between the archaeological site and Choco-Story. You can also ask about meal and pool access packages to refresh yourself during your visit. If it’s later in the day when hunger strikes, consider a stop in the town of Santa Elena, where La Central restaurant serves traditional dishes prepared by a local Maya cook. If you have time, climb the hill in Santa Elena (which barely counts as one, unless you’re from Yucatán) and visit the Mummy Museum. Although its original attraction was the mummified remains that gave it its name, it now houses a compelling exhibit on the Maya Social War or the Caste War, during which the indigenous Maya population rebelled against their white and mestizo oppressors.
If you’re up for continuing the route southeast, you’ll be rewarded with visits to other UNESCO World Heritage sites: the nearest one is Kabah, and you can go further to Labná—the farthest point on the Puuc Route–before heading back to your hotel for some rest and a refreshing swim.
Once you’re recharged, return to where the day began to enjoy the “Echoes of Uxmal” video mapping show, which includes a nighttime walk through the site and a magnificent projection that tells the famous legend of Uxmal’s founding.
Day 2
- Azul Maya workshop in Dzan
- Handcrafts in Ticul
- Lunch in Ticul or Muna
Head to the town of Dzan to visit (with prior reservation via WhatsApp at 997 113 6803) Luis May at his art workshop. Luis a talented Yucatecan artist who, in addition to being an accomplished sculptor and woodcarver, has also revived the pre-Hispanic technique used to create Maya blue pigment from a native plant. Whether you’re more interested in his carving or the ancient color-making process, Luis is happy to share his knowledge and help you explore your own creativity.
Next, Ticul awaits with its iconic products: pottery and footwear. Whether you’re on the hunt for something specific or just want to browse, be sure to keep an eye on the time; you could easily lose yourself for hours among the endless displays of local craftsmanship.
If you’re starting to feel hungry, treat yourself to the famous poc chuc at Príncipe Tutul Xiu in Ticul, or head over to Muna for a meal at Lol Pich or Finca Puuc.
