Yucatán Beach Guide: Where to Eat in Progreso, Sisal, and Beyond

In Yucatán, any hot day (so, most days of the year) is the perfect excuse for a fresh, delicious meal on the coast. Seafood is the star here, of course, but there are options for every taste, craving, and budget. Here’s a guide with a few outstanding restaurants at some of the many Yucatecan coastal towns.

Celestún

Los Pámpanos: Traditional Flavors and Ocean Breeze

After a classic boat tour through the Celestún Biosphere Reserve to admire the flamingos and mangroves, a stop at the beach for fresh seafood is a must. For an authentic coastal experience in Yucatán, head to Los Pámpanos, a beloved restaurant among locals and a popular destination for travelers alike.

Los-Pampanos-restaurante-en-celestun-by-FB-Los-Pampanos

This unpretentious yet renowned restaurant is located just six minutes from the tourist parador, where the pier for official tours is. Here, you can cool off under wide palapas, choosing between the dining room or a table right on the sand, steps away from the water. Its easy beach access makes it perfect for families with children or anyone looking for a quick swim before or after their meal.

In recent years, the restaurant has modernized its concept, adding a mixology menu and comfortable lounge chairs for sunbathing. These amenities make it a fantastic alternative to the modern beach clubs appearing across the Gulf of México coast, blending traditional charm with contemporary comfort.

At Los Pámpanos, you will enjoy seafood prepared in the traditional Yucatecan style, exactly as it has been served for generations in our region. For a full meal, I recommend starting with crab, shrimp, or cazón (dogfish) empanadas. Other great options include the pan de cazón, seafood-filled kibis, or a variety of fresh ceviches and shrimp cocktails, perfect for sharing. For the main event, the selection is as varied as it is delicious: try a traditional pescado frito (fried fish), the fish in a three-cheese sauce, the fried or coconut shrimp, or the butter-poached lobster (a regional specialty). Finally, following local tradition, end your meal on a sweet note with a rich queso napolitano (cream cheese flan).

Magical Town of Sisal

Dianelsy Restaurant:  Charm nestled in the mangroves

While the coastline of the Magical Town of Sisal captivates every visitor, there is a corner tucked away from the pier's hustle and bustle that offers a much more intimate and authentic experience: Restaurante Dianelsy. Strategically located at the far end of Calle 18, this establishment doesn’t just border the Reserve—it seems to merge with the mangroves, offering guests a cool, shaded sanctuary.

What makes this place truly special is its seamless integration with nature. Its iconic turquoise tables stretch beneath the mangrove branches, creating a rustic and highly picturesque setting. It is the perfect spot for those looking to disconnect and enjoy the serenity of the environment, interrupted only by the calls of local birds.

At Dianelsy, hospitality translates into abundant food from the very first moment. Following the great tradition of the cantinas and restaurants of Yucatán, when you order your first beer or michelada, the table will be filled with complimentary botanas (appetizers): codzitos, beans, chayitas, and even small portions of ceviche—the perfect prelude to the main course.

The kitchen here is honest and centered on the catch of the day. If you are looking for the most representative flavors of the Yucatán coast, the whole fried fish for sharing is a must. However, the menu also holds surprises like octopus ceviche, traditional pan de cazón, and, interestingly, a Beef Stroganoff that has gained fame among frequent visitors.

A couple of important notes: to enjoy the mangrove views without worry, don’t forget to bring insect repellent. Finally, keep in mind that Restaurante Dianelsy does not have its own parking and accepts cash payments only.

Chelem

Molusk: An elevated culinary experience

Molusk-restaurante-en-Chelem-terraza by-FB-Molusk

Elegance and attention to detail make Molusk a new benchmark for fine dining on the Yucatán coast. Located right by the ocean at the entrance to Chelem, this venue offers the unique advantage of being equally stunning by day or night—the latter being perfect for appreciating its sophisticated lighting design.

Upon entering, the sheer size of the space, the majestically decorated ceilings, and the now-iconic central sculpture are breathtaking. However, what truly surprises guests is the staff's attentive service and the creativity of the menu, which draws inspiration from global seafood traditions.

Molusk-restaurante-en-Chelem-manitas-de-cangrejo-by-FB-Molusk

Start your lunch or dinner with fresh appetizers such as sashimi, carpaccio, tuna tartar, fish pâté, or Peruvian-style ceviche. From there, the main course selection is virtually endless. Try their signature Molusk octopus with chimichurri and baby potatoes, teriyaki salmon, oysters Rockefeller, or king crab legs. If seafood isn't your preference, you can choose from exquisite pastas, artisan pizzas, or even a mouth-watering burger. To finish, I highly recommend the pistachio tiramisu for a perfect dessert.

Molusk opens early, making it a fantastic choice for breakfast by the sea in Chelem. Choose from various omelets, eggs prepared to your liking, sandwiches, and traditional chilaquiles. For a sweeter start, don’t miss the freshly baked bread of the day or the pancakes.

While the entire experience is noteworthy, the crown jewel of Molusk is its spectacular elevated terrace, just meters from the waves. Pairing any meal with these incomparable views is a true gift. Furthermore, you can enhance your beach day with a visit to the rooftop, where you can swim in the pool while taking in the endless horizon of the Chelem sea.

Progreso International Boardwalk

Zal Marina: Flavor and serenity on the coast

A few blocks west of the Progreso Pier, in the new section of the Malecón Internacional, you will find Zal Marina, a modern restaurant that opened its doors in early 2025.

Zal-Marina-restaurante-en-Progreso-by-IG-Zal-Marina

Its location, set apart from the busiest area of the boardwalk, makes Zal Marina the ideal spot for spending an enjoyable time by the sea in a peaceful environment. Enjoy the sea breeze thanks to the fresh design featuring open spaces and tropical vegetation, which create an atmosphere of calm in synergy with the coastal surroundings. On the hottest days that Yucatán offers, take advantage of its air-conditioned dining room.

Its menu encompasses both staples of Yucatecan seafood cuisine and gourmet seafood dishes. I visited the restaurant with a large group and, together, we tried the pescado zarandeado, the Tikin Xic fish, the Zal Marina octopus, the rock shrimp, and a variety of ceviches and aguachiles. Each of us left more than satisfied with the portion sizes and the seasoning of the dishes.

In addition to the delicious lunch options, Zal Marina offers a varied breakfast menu, with sweet options like pancakes and French toast, but also original savory dishes such as the shrimp avocado toast, eggs with lobster, and the "sailor" molletes, featuring Valladolid sausage and shrimp.

From Thursday to Saturday, visit the second-floor terrace to witness a stunning sunset in Progreso with incredible views of the sea. Accompany your afternoon with one of their exquisite signature cocktails, a cup of coffee, or a dessert: do not leave without trying the triple chocolate or the tres leches cake!

Telchac Puerto

La Mojarrita de Pepín: An ode to seafood in Telchac Puerto

I discovered the wonder that is La Mojarrita de Pepín a couple of years ago thanks to college friends, and since then, my life has been a little brighter. Seriously—everyone I work with has had to listen, at least once, to the odes I dedicate to this extraordinary spot in Telchac Puerto.

La-Mojarrita-de-Pepin-restaurante-en-Telchac-Puerto-by-FB-La-Mojarrita-de-Pepin

Whenever our travels along the Yucatecan coast take us to Telchac, I do everything in my power to convince whoever I’m with to go. And now that you have this article in front of you, it’s your turn to hear my pitch. I always bring it up, guilt-free, because their dishes belong exactly where they are: on the table. La Mojarrita de Pepín, please, just let me be your official PR!

The fabulous thing about this place is the variety of seafood delicacies it offers, all at incredibly affordable prices. When I go with my friends, the servers probably think we haven't eaten in days because, without fail, everyone orders at least three different dishes.

I always try to taste something new during every visit—not out of gluttony, but out of social commitment: someone has to gather solid evidence to convince the skeptics. During my last visit, I had some incredibly tasty octopus in its own ink tacos, shrimp and cheese empanadas, and a garlic butter shrimp salbut. The best part? All of that for less than $200 pesos.

The menu is generous and authentic: tacos, tortas, salbutes, tostadas, panuchos, and empanadas with fillings like fried or diavola shrimp, octopus, cazón (dogfish)... and even ground beef, for those weirdos who don’t like seafood (just kidding, we love you anyway).

The only tragic part is that, being such a coveted hidden gem, their hours are limited. They are only open on weekends, from 7:30 am to 12 pm. But also Saturday evenings, from 7:30 to 11:30 pm, for those seafood cravings that creep up unannounced.

So there you have it. Next time you are in Telchac Puerto (or even if you're in Mérida and haunted by cravings), head to the heart of this fishing village and fall in love with La Mojarrita de Pepín. It is an exquisite coastal treasure and the perfect excuse for a weekend getaway. Just be sure to get there early, because it gets packed... as its fame is well-earned.

Club Tarraya: A family adventure and culinary gem

When planning a family getaway in Yucatán, finding the perfect balance of great food, fair prices, and screen-free entertainment can feel like a quest for buried treasure. That treasure is located in Telchac Puerto at Club Tarraya. This unique venue breaks the mold of traditional beach clubs; though it isn’t directly on the shoreline, its immersive theme and refreshing facilities ensure you won't miss the salt water for a second.

Capita-Tarraya-restaurante-en-Telchac-Puerto-aguachile-by-Sharon-Cetina

The club is designed for exploration and relaxation alike. While adults unwind, children can enjoy everything from playground sets and foosball tables to a sand soccer field perfect for a friendly match. To beat the México heat, the club features a crystal-clear pool with a refreshing water curtain and a dedicated splash pad for the youngest sailors. One of the most enchanting spots is the koi pond, guarded by mythical aluxes, where the crew often invites children to feed the fish, fostering a magical connection with the surroundings.

Capita-Tarraya-restaurante-en-Telchac-Puerto-lago-entrada-by-Sharon-Cetina

Food is the heart of the experience, and the Capitán Tarraya restaurant offers an incredible price-to-quality ratio. The menu avoids the typical "resort food" clichés, focusing instead on authentic, fresh flavors. Must-try specialties include the shrimp aguachile (balanced perfectly for the whole family), the garlic shrimp pasta, and their signature shrimp burger. Even standard dishes, like the breaded fish fillet, carry a unique touch that speaks to the freshness of the local Yucatán catch.

To round out the meal, their mixology menu features creative cocktails and "mocktails" inspired by the legends of the sirens from the nearby Xcambó archaeological site. With plenty of space to "drop anchor" and a vibe dedicated to genuine connection, Club Tarraya is much more than a restaurant; it’s an invitation to pack the swimsuits and discover a playful, different side of Telchac Puerto.
