For a relaxing, pleasant informal breakfast or lunch, Bistro Cultural in Mérida’s Centro is a perfect option. Owned and operated by Yohann Chauvineau, from France, this casual place is exactly what the name implies: a bistro with great food at reasonable prices, and something of a cultural center as well.

The French kitchen offers a simple menu with changing features every day. There are breakfast packages with omelettes and sandwiches, as well as croissants and other delicious sweet breads. The lunch menu includes Yohann’s own homemade patés, as well as a daily soup, salad, various quiches, and tartines (homemade bread with various toppings including serrano ham, tomato and onion confite, parmesan, basil sauce, and more). There is always a vegetarian lasagne and other daily balanced meals such as vegetarian pizza, potato cake with ground pork, grilled chicken, or grilled fish with garlic. Desserts include apple tart with caramel, chocolate cake, and various other tarts.

There is an incredible array of frappés, and beverages including juice, organic coffee, tea, and hot chocolate. Yohann’s kitchen also creates treats for you to take home: homemade jams, mustards, and caramel butter. This friendly restaurant is justifiably popular, not only for the good, fresh food, but also for its very reasonable prices.

The building is an old colonial house, whose rooms have been converted into several different dining areas, along with several outdoor gardens and terraces. The art and photo gallery and whimsical wall paintings add a sense of fun to the setting. There is wireless Internet, and plenty of quiet corners to sit and read a book.

There are cultural events at the bistro on a regular basis, including yoga and a recent Saturday arts and crafts festival. LiberDanza Centro de Expresión brings an Argentinian tango class to the bistro on Mondays from 10 am to 11 am, and there is a Green Market on Thursdays from 9 am to 1 pm. This event offers talks, meditations, storytelling, music, and theater. Vegetarian food, herbal plants, aromatherapy, natural medicine, and organic products are for sale. Combined with a meal at the bistro, it is a true experience of food for the body and soul.
