One of Merida’s prettiest restaurants is Restaurante y Café Tala, in the Hotel Casa San Angel at the foot of Paseo de Montejo (Tala means “gold” in Persian). And it also has some of the most delicious food in town. The owner is proud of the restaurant’s high standards of service and top quality, fresh ingredients. The food is home-cooked and served in an understated, elegant, warm ambience. You can order any item from the breakfast, lunch, dinner, or dessert menu at any time of the day. You can choose a table in the hotel courtyard, on the sidewalk, or inside the lovely restaurant interior.

The Hotel Casa San Angel family-owned boutique hotel itself is a reason to visit the restaurant. The historical building has been painstakingly restored with beautiful wall murals, as well as many walls and ceilings preserved in their original state. The building used to be the home of the great mathematician Graciano Ricalde. Today the hotel is home to 15 lovely guest rooms, and two exclusive guest shops: 100% Mexico FONART handcraft shop with an incredible selection of elaborate handcrafted items from all over Mexico (FONART is a government organization which helps Mexican artisans); and the Pineda Covalin Boutique, which houses the fine works of the famous Mexican designers Pineda and Covalin.

Restaurante y Café Tala is known for its great food all day long, and is especially popular for its delicious hot breakfasts. It has an excellent selection of sweets, breads, cookies, pastries, and pies, all made fresh in their home bakery with organic eggs. They use fresh, local, organic, natural ingredients where possible; even their beef is hormone-free. There is a daily Persian special menu item, and a refreshing Persian beverage called Sekanghebin.

The breakfast menu is ample, including quesadillas, crepes, waffles, French toast, omelettes, and various Mexican specialties including “huevos divorciados” and chicken or egg “enfrijoladas”. If you are quite hungry, do try the house specialties: “huevos motuleños” are sunny side up eggs served over fried tortillas, bathed in a mild tomato-based sauce, topped with cubed ham, grated cheese, and green peas, and served with fried plantain; or the house combo: one “ranchero” egg, a half order of chilaquiles, and beans. And there is an extensive list of coffees, teas, hot or cold chocolate, fruit smoothies, fruit waters, and fresh squeezed orange and grapefruit juices.

The lunch-dinner menu is extensive, with Yucatecan sopa de lima and Persian cold cucumber soup to start with. The salads are made with organic vegetables, and there are enchiladas, pastas, tostadas, sandwiches and baguettes, chicken curry, chicken mole, gourmet hormone-free steak, and fajitas. There are various wines and beers to choose from. For dessert you can look at the tempting display, and then decide between the array of cakes, pastries, and cookies. And don’t think twice, add a scoop of ice cream on top.
