Always Room for Dessert: 4 Outstanding Restaurants in Mérida
Rosas & Xocolate
If you’ve never visited the restaurant at the Rosas & Xocolate boutique hotel, you have no idea what you’re missing. This beautiful spot on Paseo de Montejo offers outstanding food at all hours, but for me, there is nothing like visiting for a great dinner—if it’s with cool (chévere) people willing to order several appetizers for the table, even better (the octopus chicharrón and the duck confit panuchos never fail).
Please be advised, however, that, here, saving room for dessert is paramount. For years, my standing recommendation was the dark chocolate soufflé with crystallized petals and rose ice cream (roses and chocolate at Rosas & Xocolate? the choice is obvious). However, the new additions to their menu arrived to change the world (of dessert fans): the choux pastry filled with coffee cream and carajillo ice cream is truly a divine delicacy. Proper etiquette dictates sharing, but deep down, you'll wish you could eat it all yourself.

Yerba Santa
In a very short time, Yerba Santa restaurant has cemented its reputation as one of the best places in Mérida for an outstanding culinary experience. To give you a taste, let me mention my absolute favorites here: the oxtail taco and the duck breast in mole.
Their desserts are no exception, all combining flavors and textures in surprising ways. For instance, the Cacao 70, which consists of a 70% cacao chocolate "ingot" served with Chiapas cheese ice cream (which provides acidity) and papaya chutney (the plate’s sweetest touch), offering an adventurous palate a truly unique dessert.
However, if you ask me, the star of the dessert menu is Maíz (Corn). The description can be misleading: cornbread with tortilla ice cream and corn foam. Sound simple? Nothing could be further from the truth. When you taste it, you’ll surely recall what I mentioned earlier about surprising flavors and textures. The skill required to transform corn into each of these distinct elements, creating flavors that combine and complement perfectly—well, it is something you have to try to believe.

Picheta
One of the best pieces of advice you can receive in life is never to go to Picheta with someone overly committed to their diet. Here, you will want to try everything, and you will definitely want to make room for dessert. For me, the mandatory dessert at Picheta is the Cenote de Dulce de Leche: once you plunge your spoon in and the dulce de leche (caramel) spills out, only your own beliefs on what constitutes good manners will stop you from wiping the plate clean.
However, the last time I went, my friends insisted on ordering a second dessert: the Manjar de Coco (Coconut Delicacy). I can sincerely say I was not prepared for how much I liked it. And to think one of us (clearly not me) suggested maybe two desserts would be too much after dinner! Life is too short, and not one of us regretted a thing.

Acqua Mérida
Acqua Casual Bistro has been a part of the Mérida restaurant scene since long before tourism discovered the Yucatecan capital. Dishes like the baked Brie cheese, the green curry, or the beef tenderloin with Roquefort are classics you can always look forward to ordering.

But beware: at Acqua, leaving enough room for dessert is an actual challenge. Their desserts are not only delicious but also genuinely generous. The Galleta al Sartén (skillet cookie) and the S’more Brownie (with a cookie base and toasted marshmallows) are delicious, but their Apple Tart—pfft! Even if you’ve seen it a thousand times in photos and videos, I guarantee you will be surprised when it’s placed in front of you. Served over caramel and crowned with vanilla ice cream and sliced apple, it is designed to make you (and at least three other people) happy.

Just dessert
There are also exceptional places to enjoy a dessert and nothing else. Setting aside common coffee shops and ice cream parlors, we suggest three unmissable spots in Mérida:
Bachour Café

The eye-catching chocolates and petit-gâteaux (small cakes) that grace the display cases of this cafe in City32 are hard to ignore. These creations by Chef Antonio Bachour, who has been named the best pastry chef in the world multiple times, are a delicious and innovative luxury.

La Popería

This spot revolutionized the dessert scene in Mérida nearly 10 years ago. With a menu that is 95% desserts, La Popería is famous for its huge, decadent creations, definitely not suitable for those with small appetites.

Petit Délice

This charming corner brings high French pastry to the heart of the Península. Their visually stunning and delicate creations are unforgettable experiences, perfect for celebrating a special moment or simply indulging in the pleasure of a spectacular dessert.
