Celestún is the well-known port village famous for its huge flamingo community. While in Celestún we highly recommend you visit the La Palapa restaurant. We visited last month and were pleasantly surprised. While we expected good, fresh seafood, the fare we received far surpassed our expectations.

Upon entering the restaurant we were impressed with the open feeling, the cleanliness of the place, the ocean view and the shell work on the walls.

We started our meal with the cream of shrimp soup that was served piping hot, had wonderful flavor and lots of shrimp. Our main course included coconut covered shrimp served witha mango sauce – delicious – and La Palapa Shrimp, the house creation of shrimp coated and cooked in a smooth garlic cream. This was served with a creamy, tasty shrimp Fettuccini.

Other seafood choices include lobster, octopus, fish fillets, cocktails, ceviches, soups and more. Dishes are prepared in garlic, deviled, with olive oil and parmesan cheese, grilled, with tasty sauces, and breaded. If there is a meat lover in your group, you can choose from beef or poultry prepared in different styles. There is also a children’s menu along with a children’s play area with fun swings, dollhouses and sand toys.

The service was fast! The hot food was served hot, while the cold things arrived at the table cold. The waiters, all locals, are friendly and service oriented. La Palapa is the restaurant in town that has experience serving groups and doesn’t get overwhelmed.

The owner, a Meridano, Mr. Rodrigo Solis, travels to Europe frequently and is always bringing new menu and service ideas back to Celestún.
