Beyond nightlife, Mérida offers diverse LGBTQ+ safe spaces focused on culture, education, and community support. Key locations and organizations include cultural hubs like Serpientes de Medusa and Casa Feroz, advocacy groups such as Yucatrans and Familias Que Acompañan, and inclusive spiritual communities like Caminando Juntxs and Puerta Abierta.

Safe Community Spaces in Mérida

We've previously highlighted Mérida's vibrant LGBTQ+ bars and clubs, and if you've ever visited one, you'll understand exactly why they receive so much attention. However, spaces created by and for the LGBTQ+ community in our city extend far beyond nightlife venues.

Because not everyone is a party enthusiast, this article focuses on queer spaces with cultural, educational, and spiritual missions that enrich the community as a whole. From community centers and support networks to grassroots collectives, these spaces offer welcoming environments where anyone can feel safe, valued, and included, regardless of their interests or lifestyle.

Here are some of my favorite spaces, along with a few others that have been enthusiastically recommended by friends who frequent them.

Queer art, education, and community in Mérida

Serpientes de Medusa

This cultural center operates out of its founders' home, just one block from La Plancha Park. It recently hosted Semana Cuirtural (cuir-tural week), a week-long program featuring talks, film screenings, dance workshops, and an after-party following Mérida's Pride March.

Inclusive programming isn't limited to Pride Month, however. Throughout the year, Serpientes de Medusa creates spaces that encourage collective learning, reflection, and community building. Check out their Instagram account to stay up to date on upcoming events.

Yucatrans

An invaluable resource for transgender people in Mérida, the Asociación Transgénero de Yucatán A.C. offers workshops designed to support participants throughout an informed and safe transition process. Topics range from the medical and social aspects of transitioning to legal matters and human rights, while also providing opportunities to connect with other members of the community.

To learn more about their work, see our article "Yucatrans: Creating Safe Spaces for Everyone."

Casa Feroz

Casa Feroz describes itself as a "sapphic and dissident film club," where women, nonbinary individuals, and transmasculine people gather each week for Viernes de Terror (Friday Horror Nights).

Each month features a new theme, ensuring a diverse selection of films and discussions. Screenings take place outdoors in a relaxed atmosphere and are followed by an informal discussion circle that encourages participation from all attendees.

The film club meets at a private residence in Francisco de Montejo. Send a message to @casa_feroz on Instagram for details.

La 60 Café Atelier

Located in Mérida's historic center, this café frequently hosts workshops and events organized by LGBTQ+ groups. It has welcomed projects such as the Cinema Queer México Festival, the Lesbian Film Series, and the lesbian-feminist collective AmoraLes.

Stop by to learn about upcoming collaborations while enjoying a great cup of coffee in a colorful and welcoming setting.

Faith, spirituality, and inclusion: Churches and support groups

St. Luke’s Episcopal Church - Walking Together

Despite being active for only about a decade, St. Luke's Episcopal Church has attracted a growing congregation seeking a more inclusive and welcoming environment in which to practice their faith. The church places a strong emphasis on community, fostering connections beyond Sunday services through social and outreach activities.

Seeking a space where LGBTQ+ laypeople could share their experiences free from stigma, members of the congregation created Caminando Juntxs ("Walking Together"), a group that organizes social gatherings, conversations, and educational events.

Puerta Abierta

Based at the Church of Our Lady of Candelaria, Puerta Abierta offers a welcoming space for LGBTQ+ Catholics. The group presents a more compassionate and inclusive expression of the faith, celebrating the liturgical calendar with guidance from Father Raúl Lugo.

Activities include Inclusion Masses on the first Sunday of every month, as well as discussion forums where members share their spiritual journeys and experiences in fields ranging from professional life to sports and the arts.

Familias Que Acompañan

Parents, guardians, and caregivers of LGBTQ+ children and young people created this network in response to the questions, concerns, and emotions that often arise while supporting loved ones through their personal development and self-discovery.

The collective provides mentorship, educational resources, and guidance for families, while also collaborating with other organizations on workshops, community events, and public gatherings. Through these efforts, it helps build stronger support systems for both LGBTQ+ youth and the people who care for them.
