Thirty-eight years exploring Yucatán

On January 15, 1988, the very first issue of Yucatán Today saw the light. It was a very different magazine from the one in print today, but even back then, its mission was the same: to showcase the rich beauty the state of Yucatán has in store for those who choose to visit.  At the time, the state’s (and even Mérida’s) tourist attractions were also a far cry from what they are today. There were barely any hotels on Paseo de Montejo; where those are now, there stood family homes, sports clubs, or vacant lots. Visiting Yucatán was an adventure each traveler had to undertake by themselves, researching, preparing, and executing their plans with limited options for outside help.

A certain couple, who were not only in love with each other but deeply in love with this land, made it their mission to create a companion for these travelers, looking to help with the challenges posed by the language barrier and the lack of available information. Thirty-eight years later, a small, but dedicated team of 11 people continue to carry out this endeavor. We’re deeply committed to exploring our state so we can take you to places you might not otherwise plan to visit, and to provide you with local context on the spots that were already on your list.

Our focus is not on the trendiest places, but those that will remain the memory of those who visit; places that fully represent the most authentic aspects of Yucatán, are locals’ favorites, or offer something you can only find or experience here. In terms of New Year’s Resolutions, Yucatán Today celebrates its 38th birthday with the same goal it always does: to remain the perfect travel companion for your Yucatán adventures.

That’s why, as we have every single month for 38 years, we will continue to bring you authentic, original content, written by human beings for human beings, always focused on everything Yucatán has to offer: places, culture, nature, food, and lots of heart. We are sure that on our pages you will find what you need to truly experience the endless adventures that are possible here. It doesn’t matter how much you’ve already done, I can guarantee there’s still more to discover.

The print magazine is not the only way to bring us along. We also have a huge website with a long-running archive, a social media presence, and now, two podcasts: Your Week in Yucatán Today, an English-language weekly news summary, and Yucatán, Today! El Podcast, a talk-show take on our monthly content, in Spanish.

See, the best things in life are constantly changing! The same is true for the many beauties Yucatán offers: you may have seen them a thousand times, but you’ll always find a new angle, a new adventure, a new anecdote that will make it different. We’re happy to join you!
