Parks for Children in Mérida

Hi, I'm Cassie and I'm lucky to live in Mérida. I am originally from the UK but moved here with my husband and two young children in search of a better quality of life. And you know what? We found her. Mérida has a delightfully relaxed pace of life, allowing us to spend more time together as a family compared to what we could do in London. We have not ceased to be amazed by exploring this incredible city and its surroundings. I'm so excited to be able to share some of my favorite finds with Yucatán Today readers in the coming months.

My husband and I met when I was working with children living on the streets of Rwanda. We moved from Rwanda to Ethiopia before returning to the UK. The truth is that we are both very restless and find it difficult to settle down in a place when there is so much to explore, and it turns out that our children are also quite adventurous. That's a good thing actually, since they don't have many options with parents like us. Our children are almost six and four years old, so they already attend schools in Mérida, but we try to make the most of our free time one hundred percent, exploring everything that the city and its surroundings have to offer families like us.

It took me a while to understand how entertainment options for kids work in this city. We were used to going
to the park every day after school, but it doesn't work that way in Mérida. Parks and playgrounds tend to come alive more in the afternoon, as families leave after 5 pm to spend the sunset and evening with their children.

So far, my favorite playgrounds in the city are:

Parque de las Américas

In the García Ginerés Colony. This park is made up of four individual blocks; one of them is a playground. At 5 pm the bouncy castles start operating, the electric cars come out for rental and the local food trucks appear, turning this sleepy park into a true paradise for children.

Parque de la Alemán

It is quite similar to the previous one, with a traditional playground, a skating rink, and outdoor gym equipment. Every afternoon, from 5 pm, an inflatable castle is set up, electric cars appear, painting stations are set up and a small fair opens. Food stalls also come to the event, offering sweets, desserts and traditional Mérida snacks (such as marquesitas). There are also ice cream options and a few restaurants around the park.

Parque Kalia

In the Monterreal neighborhood, it has been recently remodeled. It has a modern climbing wall and a large space for children to play, ride bikes and skate. If you need something to eat or drink, the Chedraui supermarket is located opposite.

Renting an electric car costs around $25 pesos for ten minutes and the prices of the inflatable castle vary depending on how long your child wants to jump (or how long you want them to entertain themselves without you)... but $50 pesos per child will cost you gives unlimited time.
