Just 45 minutes from Mérida lies a little-known but deeply special spot: Isla Pelícanos, a natural gem on the coast of Chuburná Puerto. This destination is ideal for those looking to disconnect from the noise, reconnect with nature, and enjoy an ecotourism experience in Yucatán.

The adventure begins at the harbor (Puerto de Abrigo) in Chuburná, where visitors board a boat that takes them out to sea. The local guide will take you on a tour across the water while sharing the story of how the dunes and sandbanks that characterize the area were formed — the result of Hurricane Gilbert’s impact in 1988.

During the trip, it’s common to spot frigatebirds, white herons, cormorants, and of course, the majestic pelicans, either soaring over the water or resting on the sandbanks. The biodiversity of the area is impressive, and every moment invites you to pause, observe, and appreciate the beauty of the surroundings.

A natural sanctuary to explore or relax

Once you reach the island, the scenery is simply spectacular: crystal-clear waters, coastal vegetation, and an atmosphere of total peace. Here, you can choose how you want to experience it: from adventure to total relaxation.

For the more active, the island offers kayaking or paddleboarding, two highly recommended experiences (approximately $100 to $200 pesos per person, per hour). While kayaking, you can explore mangrove tunnels where the trees create a natural passageway, enveloping visitors in a mystical, silent environment broken only by the songs of birds. The sunlight filtering through creates a play of shadows and reflections that will captivate you.

If you’re more about relaxation, there are also swings and hammocks set over the water, perfect for letting yourself be carried away by the sea breeze. You can read a book, take a nap, or simply gaze at a landscape that looks like it was lifted straight from a postcard. The island has been designed with respect for the environment, using sustainable materials and always prioritizing minimal ecological impact.

Local flavors by the sea

After some time spent on the water or in the hammocks, there’s nothing better than a good meal. Isla Pelícanos features a rustic restaurant where you can enjoy freshly prepared seafood dishes. From ceviches and fried or breaded fish to coconut or garlic shrimp, the menu varies according to the day's catch, with prices ranging from $200 to $400 pesos. There are also vegetarian options and fresh natural drinks to cool off under the sun.

Meals are served under a rustic palapa, with warm service provided by the team, a family, all originally from the coast of Chuburná. It’s the perfect moment to share with your group or simply savor the experience, fully connected to nature.

Responsible tourism and conservation

One of Isla Pelícanos' core values is its commitment to environmental conservation. The local guides not only accompany you throughout the experience but also share the importance of preserving this fragile ecosystem. Visitors are encouraged to use biodegradable sunscreen, leave no waste behind, and respect the species inhabiting the area. Facilities have been designed to minimize environmental impact, which is why bathrooms are located at the departure point, ensuring the island remains as clean and natural as possible.

This initiative is part of the growing sustainable tourism movement in Yucatán, aimed at generating economic benefits for local communities without negatively impacting the region’s natural wealth.
