The Star Médica Mérida Hospital Performs Innovative Procedure with Abbott NAVITOR TAVI Percutaneous Valve
The Star Médica Mérida Hospital, innovating in Southeast México, successfully performs a procedure using Abbott’s new NAVITOR TAVI percutaneous valve, with excellent results for patients with CREST Syndrome.
At Hospital Star Médica Mérida, the first Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) using the Abbott NAVITOR percutaneous valve was performed in the southeast region of the country. The procedure was carried out on a patient with CREST syndrome.
What is CREST syndrome?
CREST syndrome is a limited form of chronic autoimmune scleroderma that affects the skin and internal organs due to excessive collagen production, which thickens and hardens tissues, including the heart. The name CREST is an acronym derived from the five main components of the disease: Calcinosis, Raynaud's phenomenon, Esophageal dysfunction, Sclerodactyly, and Telangiectasia.
What is the NAVITOR valve?
The NAVITOR valve is a minimally invasive device designed for individuals with severe symptomatic aortic stenosis, one of the complications of CREST syndrome. This condition makes it difficult for blood to flow from the heart, causing fatigue, chest pain, and shortness of breath. The TAVI procedure alleviates these symptoms by replacing the damaged aortic valve with a new valve, allowing patients to lead a more active and higher-quality life.
This device offers doctors and patients less invasive options for treating cardiac conditions.
The procedure
The procedure was led by the Heart Team of Hospital Star Médica Mérida, headed by Dr. Alejandro Díaz Cabañas and joined by Dr. Sergio Villarreal Umaña, Dr. Ricardo Gorocica Romero, and Dr. Julio Iván Farjat Pasos. Since 2016, this team has successfully performed TAVI procedures, being pioneers in Yucatán and the Península.
Thanks to the trust of their patients and the support of the director of Star Médica Mérida, Mr. Hugo Boehm Calero, procedures were carried out on the following patients:
- A young man with multiple comorbidities, a history of heart surgery, carotid artery disease, and undergoing cancer treatment.
- An elderly woman with CREST syndrome (autoimmune scleroderma), severe aortic stenosis, and a history of heart failure.
