Pursuing your passions often leads to unexpected rewards. Perhaps one of the most gratifying is finding a community of people who share your love for the same things. SoHo Galleries is a perfect example of this. Founded by Adele Aguirre in 2008, the gallery was born from her lifelong passion for collecting art. When the opportunity arose to purchase the building that now houses SoHo Galleries, Adele seized it, and with it, a chance to shape Mérida’s artistic landscape.
From its inception, SoHo Galleries (named after New York City’s art district, and Adele’s former home) has been dedicated to introducing artists not commonly seen in Mérida. While the focus has evolved to include emerging artists, the mission remains clear: to connect people through art. Adele and her team actively explore new ways to present art, making the gallery a vital cultural hub.
Empowering artists
One of the gallery’s core values is its unwavering support for artists. SoHo not only showcases their work but also helps promote their pieces in restaurants, hotels, and beyond. In some cases, the gallery has even assisted foreign artists, offering them invaluable opportunities to establish their names in the country.
The selection process is meticulous, favoring artists who bring skill and passion to their craft. Adele believes every piece displayed should spark emotion, whether it’s a smile, a sense of wonder, or a moment of deep reflection.
A vibrant and inclusive approach
SoHo’s exhibitions are as diverse as the artists themselves. From thought-provoking political pieces to abstract creations, the gallery celebrates variety, all tied together by a shared love for vibrant colors. Each year, SoHo features works from around 30 different artists, while consistently showcasing about 15 core talents, including JAAR, Othón Rivera, Víctor Dávalos, Laura Bueno, and Choco.
Building community
SoHo Galleries stands out not only for its exceptional art but also for its role in fostering connections. By hosting gatherings that bring together local and international artists with collectors, the gallery bridges the gap between Mérida’s communities. SoHo also supports local foundations through fundraising initiatives and actively participates in cultural events throughout the year like Noche Blanca, further enriching the city’s artistic and cultural landscape.
A unique experience
What sets SoHo Galleries apart is its focus on creating an unforgettable experience for visitors. Whether you purchase a piece or simply explore the gallery, Adele’s goal is for you to leave feeling uplifted and inspired by the positive atmosphere and remarkable works on display.
Looking to the future
As Mérida’s art scene continues to grow and diversify, SoHo Galleries evolves right along with it. Adele and her team are transforming the gallery into a cultural crossroads where art, music, and literature come together. With ever-changing exhibits and events, there’s a guarantee that no two visits are the same, making it a dynamic and inspiring space for newcomers and seasoned art enthusiasts alike.
At its core, SoHo Galleries is a testament to the transformative power of art, not just in shaping spaces but in touching lives. The true reward for the gallery lies in seeing how art can move people and create connections. SoHo is dedicated to growing this vision, one stunning piece at a time.
