Whether you celebrate or not, Mérida is a wonderful place to be at Christmastime. The weather is perfect, and the city comes alive with joyful events, posadas, and winter-themed shows. Everywhere you look, there are beautiful lights and decorations. If you’re wondering where to begin, here is a list of places to help your family get in the holiday spirit.

There’s nothing more magical than strolling down Paseo de Montejo after dusk in December. The boulevard sparkles with decorations, and the trees are beautifully lit. Be sure to check out what awaits at the Remate! Every evening in December (and into early January), a Christmas Village comes to life, featuring a curtain of twinkling lights at the entrance and oversized illuminated figures that children will love exploring. Highlights include gift boxes, candy canes, reindeer, a gingerbread house, a giant bear, Santa's sleigh, soldiers, and more! A very large Christmas tree stands in the middle, as if to say “Christmas is here!” The lighting of the tree marks the official start of this festive season.

Parque de la Colonia México

Filled with playful decorations and plenty of lights, children will love exploring this park in the evening. In previous years, highlights have included large illuminated stars that create welcoming gateways, lights shaped like festive figures, a nutcracker display featuring a life-size spinning ballerina, and, of course, a Christmas tree. Families can take photos with Santa, Mrs. Claus, and the elves in the evenings leading up to Christmas, and they can also enjoy regular Christmas performances here throughout December. After Christmas, Santa makes way for the Three Wise Men, who come to hear what children wish for Día de Reyes.

In the weeks leading up to Christmas, the Concha Acústica bandshell/outdoor theater hosts holiday shows and performances almost every evening.

Across the street, in the fountain area, you’ll find plenty of Christmas lights and sometimes even a visit from Santa Claus.

Coca-Cola Christmas tree

Further north, you'll find something extra fun that’s a hit with kids. A towering Christmas tree is illuminated in a spectacular opening ceremony in early December and serves as the backdrop for a stage featuring holiday shows and performances by local music, theater, and dance groups.

Competing for attention is “Coca-Cola Fantasilandia,” a fun-filled theme park featuring rides, games, and snacks. Conveniently located in the parking lot of Chedraui Selecto, you can easily go for a bathroom break (or even grab some groceries)! The Cola-Cola Christmas tree has become a beloved symbol of the holiday season in Mérida. Situated near Calle 60, which gets busy with holiday traffic, it is easily visible to all who pass by in the weeks leading up to Christmas.

Come here to experience Paseo Navideño de las Flores, an impressive flower display where hundreds of flower pots are arranged to create a colorful carpet for you to admire while strolling along the elevated walkway.

Parque de la Plancha is also a great spot to visit at night, as they decorate the second floor of the walkway with lights and Christmas displays such as oversized ornaments, a lighted tunnel, a nativity scene, and a Christmas tree.

Christmas Caravans

Another family outing that’s sure to get you in the Christmas spirit is attending one of the Christmas Caravans that take place throughout December. These lively parades feature floats, special guests, and Santa, making their way through different neighborhoods all over Mérida.

With all of its colorful lights and joyful events, Mérida offers an unforgettable Christmas experience that the whole family will love!
