Just an hour from Mérida, and twenty minutes from the Magical Town of Izamal, the village of Kimbilá has earned a reputation as one of Yucatán's best places to shop for handcrafted clothing. Family-run workshops, boutiques, and small businesses line its streets, offering everything from traditional garments to contemporary designs made by local artisans. Most are embroidered using traditional treadle sewing machines, a technique that has been passed down through generations.

You'll know you've arrived in Kimbilá long before you see the welcome sign. Along the roadside, mannequins dressed in hipiles, guayaberas, embroidered dresses, and other handcrafted garments begin to appear one after another, announcing that you're entering a town where sewing and embroidery are simply part of everyday life.

With so many shops to choose from, our first stop was Creaciones Lizeth, a family workshop where every garment reflects years of craftsmanship and tradition. Here you'll find everything from children's clothing to hipiles, guayaberas, dresses, ternos, and custom-made outfits for weddings, graduations, and other special occasions. More than just a store, it's a place where you can appreciate the work behind every embroidered piece while trying on garments and discovering the remarkable variety of styles available.

Our next visit took us to Silvia López, a workshop renowned for its elegant linen clothing. Its impeccably tailored guayaberas stand out for the quality of their fabrics and finishing touches, making them an excellent choice for anyone looking for a timeless classic. At the same time, the workshop isn't afraid to innovate, offering designs inspired by pop culture, such as the Avengers, as well as guayaberas featuring intricate deshilado (drawn-thread embroidery) that creates elaborate decorative patterns—a technique influenced by the embroidery traditions of Aguascalientes. Dresses, other linen garments, hats, and accessories round out the collection, all crafted with the same attention to detail.

After exploring several workshops, it was time to pause for lunch at El Rey de Kimbilá, one of the town's best-known restaurants. Here you can sample traditional specialties such as dzic de venado (a shredded venison salpicón—similar to a salad), along with Yucatecan favorites like panuchos, salbutes, and sopa de lima. The menu also features seafood, fresh fruit drinks, house cocktails—including the refreshing Kin Há, a hibiscus lemonade—and desserts such as crème caramel, bread pudding, and frozen treats. Main courses typically range from $130 to $250 pesos.

After lunch, it's well worth continuing your stroll through the streets Kimbilá. There's always another workshop to discover, another boutique showcasing unique designs, or another artisan eager to explain the techniques behind their creations. You could also stop by the town church, a peaceful landmark that remains at the heart of community life.

Today, Kimbilá is home to around 30 workshops and boutiques, each with its own distinctive styles, techniques, and specialties, ensuring that no two visits are ever quite the same. Most shops accept credit and debit cards and are open daily from 8 am to 5 pm.

By the end of your visit, you'll realize that Kimbilá offers much more than clothing. Every garment represents hours of skilled craftsmanship, knowledge passed from one generation to the next, and the pride of families who have made embroidery and garment-making an essential part of their community's identity. You'll leave with more than a new guayabera or embroidered dress—you'll take home a story that lives on every time you wear it.
