Tunich: Where the Art and Magic of Yucatán Are Born from Stone
An Encounter with the Maya Heart, July 25 to August 3
In the peaceful corner of Dzityá, where the city fades away and the land breathes calmly, a festival seemingly springs from the soul of Yucatán each summer. This year, from July 25 to August 3, Dzityá will open its doors to celebrate the 24th edition of the Tunich Artisanal Fair, a festivity that honors the deepest parts of our roots and fills the town's streets with life.
Tunich means "stone" in the Maya language, and like a stone, this gathering is strong, resilient, and laden with stories. Here, ancestral memory finds new forms to stay alive.
The artisans of Dzityá have learned to converse with stone and wood for generations. Their hands transform hard material into art: furniture, sculptures, and objects that narrate legends and dreams. Each piece seems to hold the echo of ancient voices and the murmur of the Yucatecan land, evoking the spirit of the ancient Maya, whose creativity flourishes under the southern sun.
From Hope to National Pride
The history of the Tunich Fair began just over two decades ago, born from the hope of those who dreamed of a better future. A group of creators, alongside the Mérida City Council, decided to share the fruit of centuries of craftsmanship with the world. Thus, what started as a simple local gathering grew to become one of the most important artisanal celebrations in southeastern Mexico.
Today, more than one hundred artisans from Yucatán and other states arrive in Dzityá, bringing with them sculptures, furniture, hand-embroidered jewelry, clothing, and delicate Maya artworks. Amidst vibrant colors and aromas of carved wood, tourists and locals walk together, discovering treasures and sharing stories. Every piece sold carries a piece of Yucatán's heart.
Much More Than a Fair: Living Culture
Tunich is much more than a market: it's a mosaic of traditions and joy where culture pulses at every corner. Visitors can enjoy dance performances, music, theater, and other expressions that fill the aisles with energy. Workshops allow both adults and children to discover, up close, how talent transforms the ordinary into the extraordinary.
Childhood also has its place: playful spaces and activities invite children to create and play, guided by generous artisans. The gastronomy, with its unique flavors, fills the air with cravings and memories: each bite is a journey into Yucatecan cuisine. In every dish, the fair pays homage to the flavor and hospitality of the region.
Adapting and Shining in New Times
In recent years, Tunich has shown that tradition can walk hand in hand with innovation. The event reinvented itself, creating alternatives for art and culture to continue traveling, regardless of distance. Thus, artisanal pieces, stories, and emotions have reached new audiences thanks to the creativity of its people.

Between Yesterday and Tomorrow
Tunich is a bridge between what we were and what we want to be. It is the symbol of a community proud of its history, building the future without losing its way. Whoever seeks an authentic experience, a moment of beauty, color, and tradition, will find in this fair an unmissable event, where the magic of Yucatán becomes memory and celebration.
Throughout the 10-day event, admission is completely free. To make your visit even easier, there’ll be parking available in the area and a free shuttle service from Mérida's Plaza Grande (main square). The shuttle runs Monday to Saturday from 5 to 10 pm, and Sundays from 10 am to 10 pm.
We look forward to seeing you from Friday, July 25, to Sunday, August 3, in the picturesque town of Dzityá, just 15 minutes from the city of Mérida.
We guarantee you’ll enjoy a unique and unforgettable experience at the Tunich Fair 2025.
