The Last Rumbera

As part of the 8th Casa Tanicho International Monologue Festival, within Mérida Fest 2026, don’t miss The Last Rumbera on January 13 at 8 pm at the Rubén Chacón Alternative Forum.
Directed by Francisco Solís, this play tells the story of Marah, a recently widowed woman who has spent most of her life holding on to a dream: becoming a rumbera, like the stars of México’s Golden Age cinema—though that era is long gone.
Originally from Havana, Marah danced rumba while her grandmother accompanied her on guitar. After arriving in México in search of an artistic future, a single room became the only place where her passion could survive for over 30 years. Within that intimate space, her memories, music, and movement come alive.
As part of Mérida Fest 2026, admission is free.
