Yucatán Bus Lines and Taxis

Mexico has a wonderful intercity bus system. Most buses that travel between popular tourist destinations are clean, modern and well maintained. Some first class buses are air-conditioned, have bathrooms and even a snack bar. Between smaller towns, if you are adventurous, you can also take a combi, or colectivo, a car or van maintained and dispatched by a collective.

Combis are often crowded and without air conditioning, but they can take you to almost any little pueblo in Yucatán. These fast-moving multi-passenger vans park on the street at numerous designated spots in downtown Mérida near and around the main municipal market and also in San Juan Park, which is bounded by Calles 69, 71, 62, and 64 in Centro.

There are colectivo taxis to almost all villages in Yucatán. The nice thing about these colectivos is that you can flag them down anywhere, and they are numerous throughout Yucatán. The buses that travel between destinations within the city range from new and clean to very old and belching fumes. Buses are almost always the cheapest way to get to any destination in Yucatán. For a bus that will take you to the most important tourist destinations within the Mérida city limits, try the Turibus.

CITY BUS SYSTEM IN MÉRIDA:

Mérida has a very extensive system of transportation using both buses and vans (colectivos or combis). The fare is 6 pesos to go anywhere, and there are discounts for children, seniors, and students on many lines. One of the most valuable possessions for a regular bus rider is the Guia de Autobus Rutas, a bus route map. These are sold downtown at most of the newspaper stands and bookstores, including Pasaje Picheta on the north side of the Plaza Grande.

There are many bus staging areas in the city. The main one for buses heading to the north is in the heart of the Centro on Calle 59 between Calle 56 and 58. These buses will, for the most part, take you where you want to go. There are several other staging areas within two to three blocks. Most buses have their multiple destinations marked on the windshield. You can also flag buses anywhere along Calles 60 and 62, the northbound and southbound arteries of the city.

Mérida's bus system is arranged in hub-and-spoke manner, with the hub being the city center. Inner-city navigation can be easy or a bit of an art, depending on your destination. A good way to explore the bus system is by just hopping on a likely bus to ride the entire circuit, usually about an hour ride, to see if it will work into your routine. If nothing else, this is a six-peso tour of a part of the city probably not seen otherwise. You will find it is actually a very friendly bus system, and have fun doing it and gain knowledge of the city in the process.

In order to visit all the points of interest on the Prolongación Montejo, hop on bus 52, Norte, Ruta 2. The point of departure is on Calle 59, between Calle 58 and 56. This bus then continues up on Calle 56 before getting on to Prolongación Montejo. If you take Ruta 1, you will end up a little east of the Prolongación Montejo. It turns left at the Monument de la Patria and goes along Campo Deportivo.

To get to Sam's, Liverpool, Chedraui Norte, or the Gran Plaza Mall, take the buses going north on Calle 60. Check out the destination name on the front window, and hop on at the stop at Parque Santa Lucía or further north at Parque Santa Ana.

If Plaza Fiesta and the areas before it are of interest, take the buses leaving from Calle 59, between 56 and 58. Look for the names of San Lucas or Felipe Carrillo on the front windows. Most of these buses will also mention the Plaza Fiesta mall as well.

When you want to get off of a bus, call out, "Baja," which means lower, or in this case getting down, and the driver will stop to let you off.

Outside Mérida:

Most of the areas around Mérida are reachable by bus.

From Mérida to Progreso:

Take the bus at the Progreso Terminal, on Calle 62, between 65 and 67, Centro. This bus travels north on Calle 64, and stops for passengers further up on this street. Transportation is provided by Autoprogreso and operates every 10 minutes between 5 am and 10 pm. One way trip $23 pesos and round trip for $38 pesos (approx.), from their terminal on Calle 62. (Tel. 999 928 3965 and 999 924 8991). It arrives and departs out of the Progreso terminal (Calle 29 x 80 y 82, Tel. 969 935 3024). www.autoprogreso.com

Back and forth between the Uaymitún area (contributed by a reader in March 2016):

"After four months living in Uaymitun/Ixil at km 21 without a car, I can report that this lifestyle choice is possible, albeit challenging, and allows for shopping in Progreso and trips to Merida seven days a week.

Choices are as follows:

1.  Noreste Line, between Noreste terminal in Merida at calle 50x 67 and Telchac Puerto

Inbound, to Merida, departures from Telchac at  5:15 am11.15 am and  4:15 pm.  Route passes through Chicxulub Pto, Chicxulub Pueblo, Conkal and follows Avenida Yucatan into Merida Centro, and takes 1 1/2 hours.

Outbound departures from Noreste terminal at  7:00 am10:30 am and 6:30 pm, the final departure passing north through Chicxulub Pto. eastbound around  8:00 pm.

2.  Costero bus between Progeso and Dzilam de Bravo.  This local bus goes back and forth along the coast road and departs from the second-class bus plaza in Progreso.

Departures from Progreso eastbound at  7:30 a.m. and 2:30 pm.

From Telchac Puerto the return bus passes by km 21 at  11:30 am and 6:30 pm.

3.  Combis run between Chicxulub main square (opposite the bakery) and km 18 from around  8:30 am to 8:30 pm. Frequency depends on when the vehicle fills up.  So if one is coming back from Merida through Progreso, you can take a bus or combi from Progreso to Chicxulub and then transfer to the eastbound combi.

Although technically the combi goes only as far as km 18, the drivers will deliver you further east for an additional fee.  I was living at Coral Blu at km 21 and the fare was $25 pesos.

The biggest problem living out in Uaymitun is being able to get back from late-night events in Merida. Taxis from Centro to Uaymitun cost between $500 - $600 pesos.

These bus and combi lines are arduous and slow, but this is what is available to the local population.  On occasion, you sit down and look around at the other passengers and see some classic Maya profile straight from a stela from Yaxchilan or a Classic Maya vase and realize that the Maya still live here, and that for many life along the coast and in small communities is spare.

I would also like to say that I am a retired grandmother and have been travelling alone all around the Yucatan Peninsula using ADO and local transportation for six years.  Not only have I never had any kind of problem, and I am out at all hours alone, but again and again people everywhere have extended themselves to me, and I have had many pleasant experiences which I will not forget."

Arriving to Cancún and want to get to Mérida?

By rental car:

If you are renting a car you do not have to worry since all the car rentals are at Cancún International Airport (CUN). Check our Yucatán map to get a general idea of your drive to Mérida that should take about 4 hours. We do recommend taking the "Cuota" (toll) highway one way to save time if you wish, and the "Libre" (free) highway back to be able to go through all the villages and get a glimpse of what Maya people and their villages are like.

By bus:

If you are taking the bus to Mérida you need to take the shuttle to the downtown Cancun bus terminal which departs from the parking lot in Terminal 3 and then stops in Terminal 2. It costs approx. $50 pesos into the downtown bus station. This bus runs every 30 to 60 minutes and takes about 35 minutes. For up-to-date information click here. There are plenty of buses departing for Mérida all the time, so if it's not high season you do not need reservations. Visit www.ado.com.mx for schedules, choosing Cancun Q Roo as the Origen and Merida CAME as the Destino.

THERE IS ALSO A VAN DIRECTLY FROM THE CANCUN AIRPORT TO THE FIESTA AMERICANA HOTEL IN MERIDA. It only operates once or twice a day, so visit www.ado.com.mx  to check the schedule on your travel date. Be sure to choose Cancun Aeropuerto and Merida Fiesta Americana as the Origen and Destino WITH YOUR EXACT DATE. It takes 4 and a half hours. You can reserve and purchase the tickets on that website, or buy them when you arrive at Cancun airport, there is a ticket booth and departures at all 3 terminals.
