One of the most unique features of Yucatán is the abundance of flamingos that call this region home. They feed and mate in Celestún, and they nest in Río Lagartos. The spring equinox was their signal to plant the crops, and they created two phenomena that are still visible to this day at the archaeological sites of Chichén Itzá and Dzibilchaltún.
