If you don’t expect the unexpected when you explore new destinations, you will almost certainly miss out on a lot. An excellent example of this is Ralf’s article on what you might discover on a road trip to Tizimín. Maggie and Violeta went off the beaten path to the small town of Yaxkukul, not far from Mérida. They knew they were looking for an horchata factory (and they found it)...but they did not know they would stumble on an exquisite hacienda that has its own...brewery! Violeta introduces us to David Mex, a Yucatecan artist who illustrates local wildlife. At first glance, you might think you are seeing a photograph...but take a closer look, and let your astonishment show: they are drawings made with more than 100 different colors of pencils. There are lots of other good reads in this month’s edition. Grab your magazine and pack a lunch, go hang out on a beach...or hit the road as our writers did this month...and open your mind to the possibilities of what you least expect.
