From October 14 to November 14, the Lu’um Puksi’ik’al / Heart of the Earth Performing Arts Festival celebrates its tenth edition under the theme U Toop’ol Neek’ / Seeds Begin to Sprout. Throughout the month, the festival will bring together theater, dance, music, circus, visual arts, artistic training, and collaborative creation across several locations in Yucatán.

This year, the program will reach beyond Sotuta, with events also taking place in Oxkutzcab, Mérida, Yaxcabá, Huechen Balam, and Kantunil. Since 2017, the festival has fostered cultural and community-based initiatives through the Casa de la Cultura Maya Nachi Cocom, connecting children, young people, families, and artists with Sotuta’s land, memory, and identity.

Highlights include Bravas Muchachas, a theater performance, and Danzón, a dance piece, on October 14 at Juan de Dios Rodríguez Heredia evening primary school in Oxkutzcab. On October 15, Canek, alguna vez supimos leer las estrellas (Canek, We Once Knew How to Read the Stars), a theater production, will be presented at COBAY in Kantunil. The same production will arrive at Universidad Benito Juárez García in Yaxcabá on October 16, accompanied by a talk on La Casa Real de Cocom. On October 17, Canek will be performed at the main square in Huechen Balam, alongside Moots, a work combining dance and interdisciplinary practices.

In Mérida, the Teatro Daniel Ayala Pérez will host dance and interdisciplinary works created at the Casa de la Cultura Maya Nachi Cocom on October 20, along with performances of Moots and Danzón.

Sotuta will also host a special program of activities on various dates. Check the full schedule here
