Emerging artist Joel Guzmán Velázquez’s imposition of inhabited landscapes on human form tells the story of intimate interconnection. His work is a remembrance, a real “Cubanism” born of the earth, evoking continuity of the country, its values and its people. The imprint of homeland blurs the boundaries of who we are and where we come from, as it illuminates the relationship of self and place.
In minuscule realism, Guzmán captures on canvas the minute detail of the Cuban landscape while evoking its ephemeral and magic romanticism. His use of “home grown” elements such as tobacco leaf, antique buttons and other found objects of Cuba define the contexts of his human forms.
Joel Guzmán Velázquez graduated in 2011 from San Alejandro Art School in Cuba, specializing in drawing and engraving. With refined and classic skill and sensitivity to the materials, his canvases are alive with boundless imagination. Guzmán, a young, promising artist only 28 years old, will be debuting in Mérida with his first solo exhibition “Landscape of the Soul” in SoHo Galleries on November 14th, 2015.
The exhibit will also include a guest artist, the award-winning Cuban ceramicist Jorge Jacas Vivanco. Jacas is one of the worldwide leading artists of contemporary ceramics.
Come to the opening night and experience the very distinct and unique work of these two Cuban artists, while celebrating the inauguration of SoHo Galleries’ expanded gallery space.
Catering for the show opening will be provided by “La Cubanita” and Cuban drinks will be sponsored by “Cerveza Bucanero”.
“Landscape of the Soul” opens on Saturday, November 14th at 7:00 pm, and runs through January 2016. Visit www.sohogalleriesmx.com for more information on current exhibitions and available works.
