Dzityá’s Artisanal Richness: Tunich Fair 2018

Tunich 2015Dzityá is a district of Mérida famous for its crafts. It’s a village just outside the city characterized by the exquisite work done in stone and wood. From the first generations who did their carving with hammer and chisel, the stone and wood from the region have achieved recognition from the national and international communities.

From July 24 to August 2, 2015, the XIV Feria Artesanal Tunich in Dzityá will take place, which during its 14 years has been a vital commercial platform for local artisans.

The Feria Tunich is one of the various activities carried out by the Ayuntamiento de Mérida (municipal government), to preserve our culture and traditions, provide touristic attractions for our visitors, and promote the richness of the crafts, gastronomy, and culture of the greater Mérida community. They grant the space to the artisan community for their dissemination, exhibition, and direct commercialization, where the artisans have the chance to promote their products and generate an economic income source to benefit themselves and their families.

Tunich, which means “stone” in Maya, is a showcase of shades and colors captured by the hands of our artisans; and it is an ideal opportunity to spend some time with your family in a setting full of live music, traditional gastronomy, mechanical games, dance, and folkloric groups.

This year we will have access to an endless array of high quality crafts at the best price, made from materials as diverse as stone, wood, textiles, seeds, pottery and bone, in a pavillion with 125 local artisans as well as a number of artisans from the guest state of Jalisco.

La Feria Artesanal Tunich also has a space called “Encuentro de Negocios” where connections can be made between producers and both national and international buyers who require high volumes of production.

The community of Dzityá is located five minutes north of the Periférico (ring road) of Mérida just off the highway which goes toward Progreso. The Ayuntamiento de Mérida will provide free transportation to get to the fair, from Mon.-Sat. 5 pm – 11 pm and Sun. 9 am – 11 pm, with stops at the Plaza Grande, Santa Lucía, and Dzityá. The entry to the fair is free, and there will be supervised parking at a cost of 15 pesos.

Don’t miss the chance to take your family to this great event, full of culture and tradition!
