Some of our favorite events are returning as Mérida opens back up again, and among the most anticipated, the Merida English Library’s Artist Studio Tour. This is their ninth tour, with new studios and artists participating each year.

This year there are 45 artists in 28 studios, including sculptors, painters, printmakers, photographers, and more. With so many artists participating, the self-guided tour is two days (February 18 and 19, 9 am – 3 pm), giving you time to visit artists who are located not only in Centro, but also in Itzimná and just southeast of Centro.

Abel Vazquez, Galleria NahualliThe artists are a mix of local, national, and international artists living and working in Mérida. Many of them are represented in galleries and museums around the world, but the MEL Artist Studio Tour is the only time their studios are open to the public. The Artist Studio Tour allows you to spend quality time discussing the creative process with each artist and, if the mood strikes, pick up a piece for your home.

Some artists will share their studio space to develop a more creative environment or help mentor younger artists. This season, Elaine Samwald and Huub Keeven, Canadian artists who have settled in Merida, will share their studio space with Dario Andres Fernandez Astudillo, a Chilean artist who moved to México a decade ago, and local wood sculptor Jorge Guerra. Abel Vázquez and Melva Medina have shared their love of art with their daughters Alma Citlalli and Aura Meztli, who are now artists in their own right and will also be on the tour. Lorraine Toohey will exhibit her work inspired by a recent trip to India, in the studio space of Ric Kokotovich.

With so many artists, you won’t get to see them all, so it is recommended that you plan your days. Buy your tickets early (they’ll be available starting on Wednesday, February 1) and plan your weekend around a neighborhood or a style of art—it’s up to you! The maps and examples of the artists’ work will be available online so you can plan your day, whether you’re walking or driving. Make the most of your time and leave the driving/parking to someone else—perhaps hire a cab or driver to take you for the day?
