“Tales of the Maya Skies” is a digital full-dome planetarium show produced by Chabot Space and Science Center in Oakland, California. It is shown daily at the new planetarium-style facility “El Observatorio” at the Mayaland Hotel in Chichén Itzá.
For 30 minutes you will be transported into the past, hearing the stories and legends of the creation of the Maya world. The beautiful voice of Latin Grammy Award winner Lila Downs narrates the rich Maya culture and history and transports us to the jungles of Yucatán. Using the latest three-dimensional laser scanning and advanced graphic techniques, “Tales of the Maya Skies” weaves together the richness of Maya culture, mythology, science, and contributions to our way of life.
The planetarium “El Observatorio” is a small domed theater modelled after the Maya’s own “Observatorio Caracol” (snail) whose remains are situated just outside the front door of the Mayaland Hotel.
Mayaland Hotel also offers other enriching ways to understand the Maya. Their program “Be Maya” incorporates traditional Maya ceremonies and educational activities so that the participant experiences Maya daily life. You can learn about their astronomy, spirituality, gastronomy, and archaeology through various hands-on events lasting from a morning to four full days. “Only those who pray, tell stories, observe the universe, cook, eat, and speak like the Maya…can be Maya.” Twenty guides have been especially trained for this project: they will share myths and legends; information about the Maya cosmos; what is scientifically proven and what is not.
