For anyone who might have a craving for gourmet home-cooked food, or would assume that such a thing might not be available in or near Merida, you are in for a treat at Soma Restaurante in Chelem! Just imagine delicious modern American cuisine with your feet in the sand under the palm trees, in a casual beach atmosphere.

Alberto, the owner-chef, changes the menu frequently in order to satisfy his own cravings for inventive cuisine. He spent many years in the US learning from highly regarded chefs, and now he and his wife Linde have fulfilled their dream of creating mouth-watering meals which look as beautiful as they taste. He makes everything from scratch, uses only the freshest ingredients, and creates gastronomic miracles from his small gourmet kitchen. He even makes his own smoked spicy Andoullie sausage.

The beach setting is informal, with tables on the sand under an ample roof to protect you from the sun. There is also a stage area with live music from time to time. The dining area adjoins the neighboring Yeyo’s Hotel, and is next to the kitchen so you can see Alberto at work.

Alberto loves pasta and has lots of delicious recipes. On Wednesday nights from 6-10 pm they have a delicious—and fun—2×1 Create Your Own Pasta night (note: the regular menu is not available on this night). Then the restaurant is open for dinner from 6-10 pm on Fridays and Saturdays, with menu items that might include these appetizers: Roasted beet salad with orange segments, jícama, goat cheese, and citrus vinaigrette; or to-die-for Mac & cheese. The main courses could include : Pork chop with sweet potato waffle, maple butter, greens salad, bacon bits & warm bacon vinaigrette; Fish of the day, mussel broth, house made smoked spicy Andoullie sausage, clams & watercress; Steak with potato gnocchi, mushrooms, spinach, and carrots; or Risotto with local green squash, caramelized onion, cherry tomatoes, fresh herbs & parmesan cheese. Dessert might simply be a chocolate chip cookie served with vanilla ice cream, but this is a home-made cookie which is baked to order and served hot from the oven.

On Saturday from 8 am-2 pm and Sunday from 8 am-3 pm Soma is open for breakfast and lunch, with choices including: Belgian waffle with fresh strawberries, raspberries, whipped cream, toasted almonds, & a drizzle of cajeta & honey; Egg white Omelet or cheddar omelet with spinach, mushrooms, onions, goat cheese; Eggs benedict or Eggs Florentine; Buttermilk French toast; or a turkey club sandwich; accompanied by organic coffee or fresh squeezed Orange Juice.
