Each month Yucatan Today visits a restaurant in order to describe what it has to offer. This is not a review; it is a summary of the menu, service, ambience, and opening hours.
July 2011
Fifteen years ago, Los Trompos opened a food court restaurant in Plaza Dorada, with the concept of fast, delicious Mexican food. Today they have a total of six fast food mall locations plus eight restaurants with tables and full restaurant service in Mérida. Fourteen locations in fifteen years, that is quite a success story!
One of their most popular restaurants is Centro 59, named for its location at the corner of Calle 59 and 60 in Centro. Before you enter the 2-storey restaurant, take a moment to admire the building, one of Mérida’s few large-scale art-deco buildings. “La Nacional” was built as an insurance company in 1936, and Los Trompos did the recent restoration.
Centro 59 is the only one of the Los Trompos to offer breakfast, which includes a full range of options from fruit to sandwiches to all the Mexican classics like chilaquiles, huevos rancheros, and quesadillas. For lunch and dinner, be prepared to be indecisive! The restaurant name “Los Trompos” (which means “top”, as in the spinning toy) refers to the similarity with its shape to the meat cooking on the spit, known as “al pastor”, so it is no surprise that this is their specialty. Before you dive in to the menu, check out the list of cocktails and find out what the special concoctions are on hand from the bar. The menu has several sections. Appetizers range from nachos (try the “Especiales”, which come topped with freshly sliced meat “al pastor) to creamy guacamole to various combinations of melted cheese served with hot, fresh tortillas. The taco section is a heavenly array of various types of beef, chicken, and pork, prepared with a choice of hot, fresh corn or flour tortillas. In the combinations section, you will see taco platters which have added cheese to the meat of choice. Consider a “ke-burro”: a decadent flour tortilla filled with your choice of meat, mashed beans, roasted red pepper, bacon, and grated cheese. It is topped with cream, green sauce, and grated cheese, and served with guacamole and chips! Salads, stuffed potatoes, tortas, pizza (topped with Los Trompos famous al pastor, for example), and grilled meats (including steaks, shishkebab, and fajitas) round out the menu. And desserts are as decadent as one would expect!
Los Trompos is impeccably clean, the ambience is upbeat, and the service is efficient and warm, probably due to the strong family values shared among the management and staff. Teamwork is their method, quality food is their pride, and customer satisfaction is their priority, making sure everyone–staff and customers—have fun in the process.
