Each month Yucatan Today visits a restaurant in order to describe what it has to offer. This is not a review; it is a summary of the menu, service, ambience, prices, and opening hours.
Mérida’s proximity to the Gulf of Mexico means that we don’t need to drive to the beach every time we get the craving for nice fresh seafood, because the seafood also comes directly to our door. One of Mérida’s best seafood restaurants is the recently renovated La Pigua, an institution in this city for more than 12 years, with another location in Campeche. La Pigua is known for its amazing menu, delicious food, and fine service.
There is an ample selection of fruit drinks, beers, and wines, to keep you company while you consider the many seafood options. Before your main course, you will want to try one of the many seafood cocktails, or perhaps some oysters, caviar, or xcatic chile stuffed with dogfish. There is also a salmon carpaccio and a crab tostada…or consider one of the many delicious seafood soups, including a creamy lobster bisque. The salads are plentiful too…with various combinations of shrimp, octopus, calamari, and mixtures of seafood. The house specialty is the Sir Francis Drake salad for two, a large seafood salad prepared with the house vinaigrette.
The main course options won’t disappoint you! Shrimp lovers have an entire section of the menu devoted just to them, including a shrimp steak, breaded shrimps, shrimps in white wine, and shrimps stuffed with seafood. The shrimps simmered in garlic (al mojo de ajo) are delicious.
For octopus fans, there are no less than five choices, and calamari lovers will see seven options to choose from, including calamaris served with Huitlacoche sauce. Fish filets come in over 15 varieties, including Tikinxic, Méniere, and ajillo. There is also a fish filet stuffed with crab in a chile xcatic sauce, as well as a seafood stuffed fish filet. And if someone in your party is not a seafood fan, “land ho!” The tasty beef arrachera is just for them.
Ready for dessert? Here are your options! Oreo cheesecake, strawberry cheesecake, coconut cake, Neopolitan cheese, lemon pie, Hershey’s chocolate pie, and something amazing called the Impossible Cake…ask your waiter to describe this! And there are ice creams, teas, and coffees as well.
