Each month Yucatan Today visits a restaurant in order to describe what it has to offer. This is not a review; it is a summary of the menu, service, ambience, prices, and opening hours.
If you are looking for a reasonably priced a la carte breakfast with all the options, the restaurant at the Hotel María del Carmen won’t disappoint you. This centrally located hotel is popular with French tourists as well as Mexican nationals, and the nicely air-conditioned dining room is busy at breakfast time. The food is delicious and the service very warm and extremely efficient. It is obvious that the staff enjoy working here. If you like breakfast al fresco, you can ask for a poolside table.
You can begin your breakfast with a big plate of fresh fruit, with or without yogurt, or fresh squeezed orange juice, along with a basket of delicious, fresh “pan dulce”, and an espresso, mokachino, or hot chocolate, and then leisurely consider your options. If you are hungry for eggs, Mexican style eggs, Ranchero style, or ham and cheese omelette are all available, and the house specialty is Huevos Motuleños. Huevos Motuleños consists of a layered stack of tortillas, eggs, refried beans, salsa, ham, cheese, and peas. It is uniquely Yucatecan (from Motul, of course) and the hotel chef prepares it perfectly. Not in the mood for eggs? Hot cakes or cinnamon sugar-topped French Toast are both served piping hot with plenty of syrup. The Mexican style beef filet tips are another specialty of the house, for those who have a big breakfast appetite. Various packages are available with coffee or tea, orange juice and a smaller fruit plate, and several different menu items mentioned above. And there is also a kids’ menu package.
The restaurant is open every day from 7 am to 10 pm, and also serves snacks, lunch, and dinner. Enjoy a cold beer or chelada, and then consider the sandwiches, burgers, enchiladas, ceviches, salads (including the House Caesar Salad for two), soups (including the Mexican classic Tortilla Soup), and poultry. One of the chef’s specialties is the Melba Chicken Breast in Raspberry Sauce. There are also beef and pork dishes, and seafood too. From the Yucatecan kitchen, everything you expect is there including Tikin Xic fish, Cochinita Pibil, Pollo Pibil, and more. Desserts are something special, and include the classic Queso Napolitano, cheesecake, and always popular three-milk cake.
