Years ago, a group of artisans from Dzityá took the first step toward their dream: a fair that would gather the best stone, wood, textile, fibers, and fine jewelry items made by their own hands.
Today, Feria “Tunich” – which is Maya for “stone” – is alive. Thanks to the support of Mérida’s City Council through the Directorate for Tourism and Economic Development, the fair has established itself as the best artisanal event in México’s southeast. This year, for its twenty-first edition, you’ll get to marvel at Querétaro’s art and artisans, as the state is this year’s guest. Creators from Guatemala are visiting too; be ready to see this neighboring country! This will be the first time you get to see their work at Tunich. As a fun fact, we have a close relationship with them, born from our shared Maya culture.
The Feria Artesanal Tunich 2022 is happening from July 29 to August 7, in Dzityá. From 10 am to 10 pm, daily, visit and purchase unique pieces made by more than 155 artisans. Like each year, the Tunich Fair stands out as a familiar, touristic, and cultural event where different expressions of our popular art coexist.
Tunich in previous years
In 2019, more than 90,000 gathered to enjoy the pieces made by 140 artisans, masters of stone, wood, filigree, fine jewelry, natural fibers, and regional textiles. In addition, the guest states were Guanajuato, Michoacán, Jalisco, Puebla, and Veracruz, achieving $3,780,000 pesos in economic benefits.
The two years that followed – 2020 and 2021 -, the pandemic turned the fair into an online event. Through the platform “Tunich Virtual,” the artisans promoted their work and visitors had the opportunity to purchase their favorite objects online. For the 2022 edition, you’ll have the same option plus the traditional fair.
