Ask the Consul:
What are the new procedures for routine American services, including passports?

We are launching some changes in the American Services Section to increase the speed with which we process requests for routine consular services and to make your time in our facility even more efficient. We are doing this by scheduling most routine services in advance and, at the same time, implementing use of a new electronic passport application which will allow us to speed up data entry of passport applicants and process passport requests even quicker.  Details for both projects are explained in this article.

Who needs an appointment?

  • First-time passport applicants
  • Minors (under 16) who are renewing a previously issued passport
  • Applicants seeking notarial services (affidavits, acknowledgements, and true copies of documents)
  • U.S. citizen parent(s) applying to register the birth of a child

Who does not need an appointment?

The following services will be accepted on a walk-in basis according to the schedule below except for holidays and the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month:

  • Emergency passport applications (M-F: 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.)
  • Adult passport renewals (M-F: 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.)
  • Requests for additional visa pages (M-F: 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.)
  • Why are we doing this?

Some services require you to meet with an American officer. Those are the services that will now require an appointment.  Since all our officers also have responsibility for visa interviews, scheduling in advance will mean you can have your interview quicker and we can better allocate our staff resources.

How to schedule an appointment:

Except in special circumstances, applicants must make an appointment through the on-line system at: https://evisaforms.state.gov/acs/default.asp?postcode=MER&appcode=1 .

Applicants needing special assistance may call the American Citizen Services section at (999) 942 5700 between 7:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

All passport applicants should fill out and print their applications via the following web site: https://pptform.state.gov/.

U.S. citizen parent(s) registering children born in Mexico should fill out the DS-2029, the Affidavit of Parentage and Physical Presence and the supplementary page, in addition to a passport application if you intend to apply for a U.S. passport for your child.  Please note that no additional passport appointment is necessary if you schedule an appointment to register the birth of your child.

We welcome your feedback about this program or any of our services.
