El Museo del Mar de México was created as a way to spread knowledge; considering the fact that we have such extraordinary biodiversity on the Yucatan peninsula, its oceans, estuaries, and marshes, with unequalled fauna.
The snail shell has captivated humanity ever since ancient times; for the Greeks, Romans, and Chinese it was valuable as a coin, for its inks used for dyeing fabric, and for its beauty in jewelry making. Our pre-Columbian cultures also used these for clothing decoration as well as in various rituals. Today they continue to fascinate humanity with more than 100,000 species in all the oceans of the planet, and they have also colonized habitats on land, rivers, lagoons, forests, and even deserts.
These invertebrate animals have managed to evolve and develop in spite of the harrassment from humans; many species are a food source for various cultures.
The museum space works as a way to bring knowledge to our children about nature, the marine world, and its conservation. The Museo del Mar project, led by the Fundaciòn Museo del Mar Mexico, A.C., in the creation process, wishes to participate with Yucatecan society, and in particular the Port of Progreso, to open the first marine museum in Mexico; providing the community an educational, cultural, and meeting space, so that students and teachers have a physical reference of which species exist in their Gulf of Mexico and in the Mexican Caribbean sea. The museum could become a much-needed tourist attraction for Progreso.
The Museo del Mar through its General Director, Luis Octavio Vela Pèrez, has participated with various exhibits in different forums including the Casa de la Cultura in the Port of Progreso, the Museo de Historia Natural of the City of Mèrida, El Museo de la Isla de Cozumel and currently an exhibit in the Gran Museo del Mundo Maya in the north of Mérida, with a collection of snails and fossils, and also at the Museo Comunitario del Mar y los Humedales in the port of Sisal, Yucatán.
The Fundación is also looking for people interested in participating and being founders of this beautiful project which will fill this generation and future ones with pride.
