A passion for movie magic has gained much popularity among Yucatecans, and in Mérida several places now show films in open air settings, giving everyone the chance to enjoy a flick “al fresco.”
If you love movies, visit each one of these events along with the people you love best. Don’t let anyone steal your spot, and join in the fun!
The Harbor Fashion Mall
The idea for “Cinema Under the Stars” came from wanting to give families a budget-friendly place to enjoy together.
Movies are chosen through a vote on social media, so you can take part and vote for your favorite. You can also bring whatever food you like since there are no restrictions regarding this. You can either bring snacks from home or buy something to eat at the mall. At each event you will find mattresses and seating for anyone who wants to join.
The screenings are appropriate for all ages, but there are plans to add another show for older audiences in the future. In the meantime, the last Thursday of each month is reserved for retro movies.
This event takes place every Thursday at 6:30 pm, next to the lake at The Harbor. Get there early and marvel at the dancing fountain show which starts and finishes the screening to the relish of all movie goers. Best of all, it’s free!

Alliance Française Mérida
This cultural gathering takes place every Wednesday at 8 pm. Participate in this free event and enjoy the very best of European cinema in their “Cine Jardín.”
In order to promote French art and culture and to help restore film’s communicative value, “Cine Jardín” has taken place for more than four years in the Alliance Française’s outdoor patio.
When you arrive, you will be able to enjoy wine and popcorn on the house; on the hottest days of the year, they sometimes serve cold beers or cocktails. However, everyone is free to bring whatever food they want to enjoy during the screening.
Each movie is chosen among the Alliance Française event coordinators. For the most part, they show European films, so you can be sure that each one will be interesting. Find out when their next screening is on their social media. You won’t want to miss it!

Instituto Kresse
With the support of the Goethe Institute, which promotes German culture in México, the Instituto Kresse of Mérida holds this event each week. The day can vary, so it’s important to check their social media to see the movie which will be screened.
The films shown tend to be in German, but will usually have Spanish subtitles so that more people can enjoy them.
This is a free event and open to all audiences, as they show cinema for children, teens and adults. Take note, though: you have to register and RSVP; you can do this by phone or through Facebook.
Each movie is screened in Instituto Kresse’s outdoor patio at their Francisco de Montejo location. When you arrive you will see that they have the perfect place to enjoy the very best in German cinema. Chairs and seating arrangements are available and you can bring whatever food and snacks you like.
