“Movidos por el café” is a slogan that embodies what coffee means for the founders of Midtown Café: engaging in long conversations, enriching relationships, making and changing plans, finding inspiration, finishing cycles, discussing work, dreaming of vacations, waking up, preparing for a long journey or a big night, killing time reading a book or simply watching the world move in front of yourself.
This cozy café and bookshop is tucked away in the neighborhood of García Ginerés, near the historic Centro. It is within walking distance of the hotel strip on Avenida Colón and Paseo de Montejo.
For a little over two years, the baristas have been inspired by the opportunity to prepare the perfect coffee—from espresso and americanos to cappuccinos and the silky smooth customer favorite: “espresso doble cortado.” The rich taste of the coffee is achieved by using only freshly ground beans which are toasted to perfection.
The café has an inspired variety for coffee enthusiasts and connoisseurs, specializing in alternative methods for coffee prep. These methods each render a distinct product, demonstrating the complexity of the coffee grain. The different tools and techniques require special attention to the temperature of the water, size of the grind, pressure, and timing, all in the pursuit of a unique coffee experience. You can order coffee prepared via chemex, V60, Japanese siphon, cold brew, air press, Italian café, and french press.
If you are looking for something fun, order a frappé made with coffee or a chai frappé, prepared with chai tea, which customers claim as the most delicious. You can also order coffee soda, Italian soda, or a refreshing cold brew.
To top it all off, there is an extensive tea menu, with tisanas, herbal and fruit tea, served iced or hot. The teas are full of antioxidants, and can be either stimulating or relaxing. You can find green, black, white, matcha, pu-erh, chai, and many different kinds of tisanas on the menu.
It might seem like coffee and tea are the primary focus of the café, but they also have an incredible bakery with treats prepared on-site to go along with the perfect drink. The baker whips up delightful confections like tiramisu, lemon pie, panna cotta, mousses, sweet breads, and tarts to please every craving.
The kitchen also offers breakfasts, panini sandwiches, and salads. With a laid-back atmosphere and the perfect menu, it’s easy to fall in love with this place. This has become one of my favorite places. The staff is friendly, the coffee and the food is good and they have wifi. I am becoming a “regular” here and recommend you try it if you haven’t.
