From January 5 to 27, enjoy the celebrations from Mérida Fest. The city of Mérida was founded on January 6, 1542, on the remains of the Maya city of Ichcaanziho (five hills), also known as T’ho, by Francisco de Montejo y León “El Mozo.” So in 2019 we are celebrating 477 years since its foundation!

To commemorate the city with all the honors, as it deserves, the program will have more than 140 dance, theater, scenic and visual arts, literary, music shows, just to name a few, with more than 650 artists on stage. Almost all the events are for free for everyone!

The traditional part of the Mérida Fest celebration will start on the night of January 5th with a serenade to the city, where hundreds of Trova singers walk together to the Municipal Hall to sing to our loyal and noble city. Get your camera ready and arrive early to get a good seat, because the scene of so many Trova singers together and the fireworks after they sing “Las Mañanitas” are unique photo opportunities, plus the fireworks are amazing.

Next day, early in the morning, on January 6, the locals go to mass at the San Ildefonso Cathedral for a ceremony in commemoration of the foundation of our city. Come to all the cultural events that will be taking place in the cultural centers, parks, forums and open areas, and celebrate Mérida with us!
