“Nature always wears the colors of the spirit.”
-Ralph Waldo Emerson

Who better to inspire us about nature than Mr. Emerson! You’d think he had read this edition of Yucatán Today.

One of the most unique features of Yucatán is the abundance of flamingos that call this region home. They feed and mate in Celestún, and they nest in Río Lagartos. On page 6 of this edition, Cassie Pearse takes you on a visit to Celestún with her children, and offers lots of tips on how to enjoy your time there.

On page 8 Violeta Cantarell invites you to Isla Arena, just across the state line in Campeche. In her own words, it’s a place with “birds and pelicans as far as the eye can see, relaxing ocean sounds, and sunsets that will take your breath away.”

Did you know we have a tree with magic properties in Yucatán? It’s called the “jabín” and you can learn all about it from Andrea and Alejandro Medina. It’s a beautiful tree and you’ll see it in bloom all over Yucatán during the spring.

Speaking of spring, on March 21 you can combine an event of nature with the incredible accuracy of Maya astronomy as it was integrated into architecture, and share a moment in time with the ancient Maya. The spring equinox was their signal to plant the crops, and they created two phenomena that are still visible to this day at the archaeological sites of Chichén Itzá and Dzibilchaltún. Don’t miss them!

So, this month, we invite you to grab your copy of Yucatán Today, take some inspiration from Ralph Waldo Emerson, and go outside! See what Yucatán has to offer under our beautiful blue skies. That’s just one of the colors of the spirit that Nature wears around here!
