“To expect the unexpected shows a thoroughly modern intellect.”
– Oscar Wilde
When he wrote this for his highly acclaimed play “An Ideal Husband,” Oscar Wilde was not referring to travel in general, never mind exploring the state of Yucatán; but I’m sure he wouldn’t mind if we apply it to our magazine this month. If you don’t expect the unexpected when you explore new destinations, you will almost certainly miss out on a lot.
An excellent example of this is Ralf’s article on what you might discover on a road trip to Tizimín, page 7. He’s been exploring the highways, by-ways, nooks, and crannies of this region for many years, so his expertise is worth its weight in gold. Keep your eyes and ears open, and look for what’s just beneath the surface.
Maggie and Violeta went off the beaten path to the small town of Yaxkukul, not far from Mérida. They knew they were looking for an horchata factory (and they found it)…but they did not know they would stumble on an exquisite hacienda that has its own…brewery! Now that’s what I call an unexpected discovery. Maggie’s report is on page 8.
On page 10, Violeta introduces us to David Mex, a Yucatecan artist who illustrates local wildlife. At first glance, you might think you are seeing a photograph…but take a closer look, and let your astonishment show: they are drawings made with more than 100 different colors of pencils.
There are lots of other good reads in this month’s edition. Grab your magazine and pack a lunch, go hang out on a beach somewhere…or hit the road as our writers did this month…and open your mind to the possibilities of what you least expect. You never knew your intellect was thoroughly modern, did you!
