“Remember to celebrate milestones as you prepare for the road ahead.” – Nelson Mandela
And that’s exactly what we are doing at Yucatán Today! It’s our 31st birthday on January 15. Our story began in 1988 when husband and wife team Juan Manuel Mier y Terán and Judy Abbott decided to combine their love of Yucatán with their skills in photography, graphic design, and writing, and create a monthly magazine that would help visitors discover all this state has to offer. We continue to be the traveler’s companion, helping you to experience the essence of Yucatán.
But we are ever mindful of industry trends, readers’ preferences, and exploding growth in our region, with more and more things to do, places to go, and gastronomy to savor! Sometimes it’s hard to keep track of all the new developments in the world of Yucatán tourism. With your input, which is so important to us, we try to be prepared – and prepare you – for the road ahead.
This edition has plenty of new feature articles: on page 4 you’ll meet some entrepreneurs who are turning an eyesore into a useful product; and on page 5 you can hop aboard a city bus and see what transpires. On page 6 you’ll find out how to enjoy the local beaches with your kids.
Our friends at Soho Galleries are celebrating their own milestone, a decade of passion for the arts! Read their story on page 7. If observing wildlife – including spider monkeys – is on your bucket list, find out about Punta Laguna on page 8. Biodiversity is the order of the day at Cuxtal Reserve, on page 9.
I’d also like to invite you to read an amazing story of a local business owner, Señora Homa, of Hotel Casa San Angel. If she doesn’t inspire you to set a goal and achieve a milestone of your own, nothing will!

Hola! We very much enjoyed our personal tour of the office when we were here last April. If you recall, I am a journalist in the United States and I was here with my wife, Amy, and my cousin, D’Ellen. We especially appreciated the calendars you gave us. Amy and I are heading to Izamal today and will be making a small circle through Telchac Puerto and Progreso back to Mérida, so we thought we would stop by the office for a few minutes and say hi if that’s OK with you. We should be back in Mérida sometime Thursday afternoon. Please let us know if that works for you.
We are glad you enjoyed the tour. And of course, you can go to our office, we wait for you. We open from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
