“Wherever you go, go with all your heart.” – Confucius
Our quote this month seems appropriate since it’s the month of “love and friendship;” but I chose it also because this edition has so many great places to go and things to do that we hope you will experience with all your heart.
Did you fall in love with the baby jaguar on our cover? You can read about the significance of the “balam” to the Maya, and its precarious status today, click here. And more about the Maya: traditional musical instruments are featured on page 4 on our online magazine, and the history of the “sacbé” (white road) is here.
We have two new monthly articles! “Take it With You” on page 6 on our online magazine will focus on a different theme each month: what you can shop for while you are here and take back home with you; and, back by popular demand, “A Seven Day Stay” read here.
In the mood for a big party? Carnaval gets underway on February 22 at Xmatkuil; check the schedule here. For an unusual art experience, check out Nahualli Galería; you can read about the creative couple who live and work in this gallery on page 7 on our online magazine. If you like markets, you can find out about three of our favorites here.
And let’s not forget about food! The restaurant feature this month is all about burgers; check it here. And we went to Izamal to learn all about a Yucatecan icon: “Frijol con Puerco” (beans with pork). Read it here.
Finally, I’d like to leave you with a comment we received from a reader; this is what makes us all love working at Yucatán Today:
“Here we are once more, in Uaymitún. Thanks for the January issue of Yucatán Today. Without the valuable articles in your magazine, we would miss most of what’s going on around the area. Thank you, thank you, thank you!”
Go! With all your heart!
