I chose this lovely quotation about children for my letter this month because April 30 is “Día del Niño” (children’s day) in México. We have two articles in this edition which are all about children: we provide you with some suggestions for activities with kids, and on page 6 for our online magazine some ideas about Yucatecan gifts and souvenirs for children.
Speaking of young people, remember the beautiful photo on the cover of our September edition, of the children in Yucatecan attire, taking their “selfie”? The same photographer, Fernanda Ortiz, has provided us with this month’s cover photo: a close-up look at the embroidery and other details which are important in the traditional dress of the Mestizas. You can read about it here.
Habanero chiles, La Sala Art & Design Gallery, Mexican folk art, and Lebanese food all have their special places in this edition. You will also enjoy reading about the Maya people of Yucatán, yesterday and today, on page 9 from our online magazine: many traditions have endured but they are also active citizens in this blended culture.
And finally, a word about places to go: you can read about the coastal towns of Río Lagartos and San Felipe, and Oxkutzcab, one of our favorite colonial towns. Which leads me to an apology: last month we told you about a hammock festival in Tecoh, and several of you have contacted us to say that there was no such event. I am sorry! We always try to get the most accurate information possible, and this time it didn’t work. Things don’t always go according to plan when you are traveling, so be flexible; and we will continue to guide you as best we can.
This month, hit the road with your kids! And let your own inner kid out to play!
