It is with great pride that we tell you about an incredible milestone we have reached: on January 15, 2018, Yucatán Today is celebrating its 30th birthday! It’s been a long journey, and yet at moments it feels as though the time has passed in the blink of an eye.
Our story began in 1988 when husband and wife team Juan Manuel Mier y Terán and Judy Abbott decided to combine their love of Yucatán with their skills in photography, graphic design, and writing, and create a monthly magazine that would help visitors discover all this state has to offer. Their vision was to “take the visitor by the hand,” as if they were guiding them personally around the region.
On January 15th, 1988, Yucatán Today was hot off the press with a total of 5,000 magazines per month. Today we print a monthly circulation of 12,000 magazines. And now, of course, you can also find us on www.yucatantoday.com, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
The story of the magazine involves the teamwork of talented staff members who have come and gone, the evolution of printing techniques, the acquisition of our own printing presses, the explosion of the Internet and social media, and changes to our company logos and magazine design. We have laughed a lot, and shed a few tears along the way. The death of our founder Juan Manuel in 2015 brought the team even closer together, and more united in the vision he and Judy dreamed up all those years ago. Judy continues to be active in the company, and their daughter Andrea has taken the helm. This is a family business that has remained true to its roots. Today there are 15 people at Yucatán Today, with some members of the team with us for more than 25 years!
Over the years, we have told many stories about places to go and things to do. We have told you about the businesses that welcome visitors and locals into their restaurants, galleries, shops, hotels, and more. We have strong relationships with our family of advertisers and suppliers. But day in and day out, we never forget why we do what we do: create great content to keep our loyal readers engaged.
We look forward to continuing to be the traveler’s companion, helping you to experience the essence of Yucatán. Thanks for keeping a copy of the magazine tucked in your backpack or displayed on your coffee table; or better yet, for passing it along to a stranger who asks you, “What is there to see and do in Yucatán?”
Here’s to the next 30 years, and the next!
